A month or so ago, I bought a 2x4 -- nothing special. It was over 4 bucks. At the time I thought Wow. I didn't end up needing it, so I was going to bring it back
I decided to check the prices now because I just read something about lumber prices.
Now, they're 8 bucks or more! Forget gold, invest in lumber .
It's crazy like that all over...... A truckload of PVC fence materials has gone up about 35% since the first of the year. Now they quit raising the item prices and just applied a "raw materials surcharge" on the invoices. This varies from vendor to vendor, but the bottom line is usually pretty much the same. Some raised unit prices & applied a smaller RMS. Most of the manufacturers have put a monthly quota on their customers. They are limiting them to the amount they bought last year. If you need more, well, you're SOL... It'll turn around one day and they will be beating our doors down again, but for now, all we can do is keep putting orders in and hoping we can get the material we need in a timely fashion. First pic is a typical invoice for a t/ of PVC lineals, about March1st. The second one is what we are looking at since April 1st. Ouch!!!! We generally get at least 10 trucks per month. Could use about 3 or 4 more.
Crazy...isn't it. A friend who is a builder...and...part of our Brekkie Crew...was telling us that about a year ago he was paying about $13 for a 4'X8' sheet of plywood...same thing today is over $50.00. Even though his prices have obviously gone up...he doesn't lack for business.
We can't get enough materials, period. PVC, aluminum, and chain link fence is in high demand and short supply. Prices are through the roof but it hasn't slowed down. Most of my customers are booked out for 10-12 weeks and can't find help.
My daughter was telling me that people buying new homes are just getting 'builder grade' for the most part. Nobody can guarantee the price of materials so they're going with basic and hoping to upgrade later.
