Has anyone else had to remove the white plastic washer inside the cap on the Spicer 5-1410X in order to get the clips to seat properly? We fought the dang thing for a couple hours going every which way and could not get the clips to go in till we removed those white spacers, I mean it was physically impossible to do until that washer was removed. Curious if others have had the same issue.
I was replacing the rear u-joint on the driveshaft at the rear diff.
No. That problem means that the yoke ears are bent inward. It's a typical problem when using a u-joint press or hydraulic press to remove them. They CAN be heated and pressed apart but it's a roll of the dice. You have to remove BOTH washers from the axis in question or you'll end up with a hell of a vibration...I doubt you have that much of a clearance issue though.
I did remove all 4 washers and don't have a vibration issue. The joint had to be cut out due to rust issues so the ear did get put on a press to try and push the cap out, I was wondering if that could have been the issue. Ended up getting the cap out with a c press.
How's the fitment in the pinion yoke? If the washers were removed from those trunnions, then the u-joint would be free to move side-to side between the stops since the straps really don't control that direction of movement. I'd put those two back in personally as they won't cause an imbalance.
It was a tight fit getting the clips in, not much of any movement which made me wonder if those spacers come out sometimes. And I was using the brass clips.
