I was wondering if those advertised engine oil additives are worth anything or just snake oil? One i know of is that Z-max stuff and I am particular curious about an additive by Lucus Oil. I see it in the Local Checkers store with the niffty little display that shows gears moving through oil, with and without the lucus oil, and the one with the additive is more viscous. Anything special about this stuff?
Oh, one more question I have just broken in an engine on my '81 Full-size Bronco (302 to 351w) and it now has 1,500 miles on it. Should I ever consider using Synthetic and if so, at what milege should i put it in? Thanks, Ryan
From my understanding running a new engine 1500 miles on dino oil is recommended before switching to synthetic. Should you? Thats up to you, personally I am thinking about it. It does cost more but then again you change it less frequently in some cases. Good luck
After going to a Mobil 1 website (www.mobil1.com) and reading about synthetic motor oils i was thoroughly convinced that going to a synthetic motor oil is the way to go. I noticed how much easier it is for the engine to crank and start up in cold weather whereas dino oil thickens at colder temperatures. Beware that although synthetic oil may claim that you can go up to 25,000 miles between oil changes, a vehicle warranty may not allow extended oil change intervals with synthetic oil. Ford may even void a warranty if you exceed Ford recommended oil change intervals.

Most of the regular engine oils these days will work just fine and you will get great results as long as you change your oil every 3000 miles and use a good filter. The biggest advantage to synthetic is cold starts. If you live in a cold climate synthetic will definitely give you more longevity if you don't plug your rig in. (oil pan heater) On the other hand if you have engine oil leaks it will definitely leak more too. I don't care how long they say you can go on synthetic I would still change it at 3000 or at least when it start looking dirty. Just my 2 cents worth!
JWTAYLOR hit the nail on the head, that is what I was always told of synthetics, because they are actually too good for proper break in of an engine, but after 1500 miles you will benifit from synthetics.
