The air is not coming back out, just slowing down. The design of the turbo wouldn't allow it to come out if it wanted to. If air was forced back thru the compressor wheel, it would actually reverse. Think of it this way, air is moving at a constant high speed from point A to point B. In the middle is a compressor wheel which is turning at a constant high speed. The compressor blades are fixed, so any change in air speed will change the compressor speed. If this speed is decreased slowly, the air moving thru the blades will remain laminar, the compressor will slow gradually, and the blades will keep their "bite" if you will. If the air speed is dropped suddenly, the blades will create turbulence as they try to adjust and regain their "bite". This is the noise that is heard thru the Tymar. This does happen with the factory airbox, and I am convinced that the Tymar does not make this better or worse, just audible. The Tymar does, without a doubt, flow much more air, but the speed at which the air flows is the same as the stock box.

I put mine on last February and since then I've put about 25K miles on my truck (151K total right now). No problems and it runs great. I don't mind the turbo whine at all.
John...
yeah...that's where I've been doing all the reading lately on the turbo stall/surge subject and I guess that's what got me second guessing this whole deal.
Phat...sounds reasonable....and I'm with you as far as it has always been there, but the tymar makes it more audible. so what your telling me is that this shifting into OD and the decreased air flow isn't stall or surge? and if it is one of these, which one?
After using the Ford AIS intake system for about 90 days I have found that it filters great. The downnside is, that it starves the turbo and engine for air. The filter indicater was at 50% and the filter is perfectly clean. I reset it and went for a run with the 110 HP setting on the SCMT and after 5 miles of agressive driving the indicator was about 25% and on the return trip back up to 50%. I would think this would mean the turbo is starving for air??
Mine does the same thing with the Diablo 60 HP tune. Smokes a lot as well. I was thinking the same thing - not enough air for that increase in fuel. Also found the EGT's to be 1200+ at WOT. Ouch! I backed off to the 40 HP tune until I can get 4" exhaust put on.
hmmm.....that suprises me. I have read several things (especially on ford-trucks.com) that suggest that the new AIS flows just as good if not better than the Tymar and filters just as comparablely. I don't know what I'm gonna do....for now, the Tymar stays on and the noise has either lessened or I'm getting used to it. Either way, at the moment I'm happy with what I"ve got.

It won't flow more air because there is a lot more restriction. It should filter the same as the Tymar because they both use Donaldson paper elements.

I think you may have mis-read that post a bit. I believe the flow comparison was with a stock set-up. There is no physical way an AIS can compete with an open air set-up flow wise. The element is just too small. I agree it does have comparable filtering ability.
FOrdFOever believe it or not I did catch the year model of your truck. I have a 96' that I pull a 36' Sundowner with out to Wyoming from Tennessee. Have to keep passenger mirror on exaust to make sure I don't load up the motor and look like I brought an old steamer from the Mississippi to the Big Horns. No Air! I'd like to know if any extreme mods had to be made putting on my filter? I have a question to Phat02. What about water? I still run the stock box. I've been in some real frog stranglers down south. Is the Tymar set up for my truck? I haven't check out webshots.com but heading that way now. I like the sound especially going up the hills in second! Ok, I'm only going 35mph but it sounds great!
Yes, bought one(filter) at Napa for $16.86. Already had a 4" OD 45 degree pipe and 2 clamps. Works a lot better for the air flow, but is more noise from the turbo.

yes...I got mine from a local exhaust shop. Check em out. .. Some have even used PVC..though I would not recommend it. I would worry about the engine heat and warping of the PVC.
so Michael....you made the switch from the AIS to the Tymar?
