Can someone help me with a vin for a 1950 coe, I see that the 9 is 49/50 and 8H should be the engine but I don't see an 8H and W should be the type but I have only seen a WH but not just W, the asterisks are the serial number.
What is your engine type and series of your truck? W and WH are the designations for F5 and F6 COE's respectively, similar to the T and TH of conventional trucks. We've seen that sometimes the H doesn't always make it into the serial string on F6's.
7H is typically found with the 226 6 cylinder. 8M is the designation for the 254 6 cylinder, used in F6 trucks, conventional and COE.
What you are looking at could simply be a typo that made it through the system. Rare, but not unusual.
From the 48 Operator's Manual it lists the following:
F5 COE 1 1/2 ton 6 cylinder was identified as 8H0W for the 110" wheel base
F5 COE 1 1/2 ton 6 cylinder was 8HW for the most common 134" wheelbase truck
F5 COE 1 1/2 ton 6 cylinder was 8H8W for the 158" wheelbase version
V8's followed the same pattern with R substituted for the H in the above examples
COE's for 49and 50 would be same model designation as 48's except the first two characters would be 98HW instead of 88HW
49 and 50 F6 2 ton COEs had an additional H at the end of the string. 98H0WH, 98HWH and 98H8WH
