I need to change the o-ring between the intake manifold and the front cover, it is leaking. I have watched a couple of videos on removing the front cover or loosening the intake manifold to replace the o-ring. Which method have you tried and what are the ups and downs for each method. I am not having leaks from any other place, no oil leaks on the front cover or any other seals. All the engine components are in place so there isn't a starting advantage to either.
This is for a late 04 6.0, Excursion. I already have the red o-ring from Ford.
I did one of those but it was a few years ago. I don’t remember the details but I removed a few things, loosened a few others, pulled the intake bolts and lifted the front of the manifold without removing it completely. Seems like the turbo stayed bolted up but maybe dropped the up pipe and egr cooler connection. I do remember cutting a wooden wedge something like a doorstop to hold the manifold up. It did have to come up a little higher than I expected because there was some corrosion and I bought a little brush to clean up the area. Intake gaskets survived the procedure.
I have been in my X twice, replaced the head bolts with ARP studs and replaced the EGR cooler.
I think you would be better getting an intake gasket kit and doing the job right. I have found cutting corners usually leads to more time and cost. Ask me how I know.
Would suggest you do an EGR delete while you are in there.
Thanks for the information, sounds like I’ll be loosening the intake.
I have already completed the EGR delete, remote oil cooler and coolant filter, did them back in 2017. I also replaced the o-ring at that time too but it has started leaking again. This time I have the updated red o-ring so hopefully it won’t be an issue.
I too have been the victim of my lazy ways and ended up doing it the way I should have done it to begin with....the right way
Good luck
