Anybody replaced the mechanical voltage regulator with an electronic one? I’ve seen A Motorcraft for 50 bucks and an AC Delco for 25 bucks. Looks like they are plug in replacements but thought I would seek the sage advice here.

If you haven't done it already you need to disconnect those two rectangular plugs that come thru the cowl beside the e-brake cable and clean all the connections. Everything going on outside the cab passes thru those connectors. They may not come apart without a fight if they have turned green inside.
I replaced mine with SS three years ago. The original style I bought from a parts supplier went bad very quick. Anyway, the old voltage regulator cover fits right on in case you are into how it looks.
