`79 f100, 4 speed O/D, the one with the linkage on the side of tranny, what kind of tranny is it, is it a good tranny?
I had an `82 dodge truck with the same set up, were these trannys used across the industry or did ford make there own?

Not stupid at all. What you have is the T170F (Code -RUG) tranny. I don't believe any other mfg used this tranny but Ford and they made a version for the passenger cars also, only lighter bearings, etc.
