The New 2004 trucks are claiming great improvments. I'd always had a Ford trk, untill the 80s. The standard trannys were terrible. I had a bad one and so did some friends. When I went looking at the salvage for one, I was told they "flew" out the door because everyone was looking to replace the bad ones and then sell.
Has Ford changed back from those aluminium wonders? I need a new truck, but as they say "twice fooled, shame on me" Any thoughts?
I've had a 1996 F-250 4x4 7.3 Turbo Diesel , bought it used in 1998 w/47,000 miles on it , taken good care of it more or less, considering I own a 50 acre farm, it now has 105,000 miles on it and the tranny leaks at the front from pulling 2 horses every time I go on long trips (+100 mile)
I'm considering a Chevy/GMC with an Allison Tranny after being a ford buff all these years.

If your looking for a manual tranny you will have to step up to the F250 on up. The ZF 6speed is an awesome unit as the previous ZF 5speeds from the late 80's. The only manual trannies I would avoid are the M50d and the SROD. The T18's T19's and NP435 were awesome trannies in the 80's!
My first 90's model F-150 had "helper" springs on it and it carried 3,500 lbs. worth of equipment in the bed 24/7 and occasionally towed a flatbed trailer with a tractor on it on top of all that. I sold it at 130,000 miles, and the only thing we ever did was change the clutch disc which is normal maintenance. So I don't think it's safe to say that Ford manual trannys are cheap. That truck got abused, and it ran like new for years.
Today's Fords have even more improvements, especially to the automatic tranny lineup. In fact, I rarely ever hear of a problem with with a Ford transmission anymore.
