On My 99 the other day it would not start...I shifted to Neutral ..started.....so I realized something was out of adjustment...I had a recent rebuilt / Upgrade of the tranny about 10 K ago .....All the goodies Convertor / Valve Body you name it ....Truck runs excellent ....I was wondering where I adjust it ...on the tranny ? On the column...It is not a big deal just annoying ......saves me time looking through my manuals...Never had this issue on the Van....after changing several trannys.....so that is why I am asking here .....Thanks for the replies in advance.
First thing to check is the shifter up under the dash. There’s a couple bolts (or nuts) that like to work loose. Both of Dad’s were loose and one took like 5 turns to tighten up.
Next I would check the neutral switch on the trans if all the physical shifting is ok.
If it truly is the shift cable then there should be an adjustment on the trans.
Thanks for reply...that is what I was thinking ...I have all the manuals but this is my First Pickup in 20 years..I am a Van Guy and a I assumed it was similar but I needed to ask first... I was also thinking of the Trans switch since it is a recent rebuild....so with Diesels stuff shakes loose...trust me ...lock- tite is your friend ( NOT the Engine **** ) The Cable I never played with on the Vans...I guess it is the same as the Trucks..I have the manuals...Ok I will let you know what it was....Thanks for the Insight ... BTW...I also Installed a Tugger Kit on my Trans Rebuild on the 250 as well as the Van...great Kits....
I don’t have a photo of the bolts I was describing. They are sometimes tricky to see. Lay in the floorboard and look up along the steering column. They are up there a ways. This is a good starting point.
Could also have worn bushings on the shift tube or loose/broken hold down clamps. I agree the 2 torx head screws are the most common, but if they check out fine the bushings and clamps are another spot to check.
