the other day I was offered a ramsey pto driven winch for my bronco, I obviously wont be able to use it w/the pto drive(shaft is on the wrong side) but I was thinking that I could mount an electric motor on it and set it up like a regular winch. it is already rated at 8000 pounds, but would this work, and even if it did, would it not be as powerful?
why does your winch have to be mounted where you are thinking of mounting it?
. . . but more directly to your question:
I'm pretty sure an electric motor that would run it would be disproportunately expensive (as compared to just buying a new electric winch).
i have a catalog that has winch motors in it- cant think of the name darn it, but there like 80 and 90 bucks and the selinoid is about 25. I think that putting a motor on it would work because if I remember right this winch already has a reduction built into it(worm gears i beleave), so even a small motor should work, plus, a bronco is not a whole lot of weight to pull, most definetly not 8000 pounds, and i dont think that anywhere Im gonna go will be quite that bad. the winch is meant to be frame mounted, but what it came off of had a way narrower frame than my bronco. so i would need to build a new bumper (no prob, i know of some stainless steel tubing and need a project for ag)
Well, it sure sounds like you have thought it through. The price you mentioned for a suitable motor is *great* (so great I would be suspicious - but that's just my nature).
My intent was simply to make sure you didn't restrain your thinking to "inside the box".
To that end . .
I would LOVE to have a mid-mounted winch - under/in the floor boards, with cables and pulleys that would allow me to ****** the cable out at either end of the vehicle for winching in the direction of my chooising without major . . jury rigging, being necessary.
I have seen this done on a number of trucks - but it has *got to be* an engineering challenge and a half on most vehicles . . in my not so humble opinion.
Anyway . . it's nice to see you are more interested in finding a SMART solution than just blindly throwing money at the problem.
alot of the older winches do use Starter motors w/out problems. the real down side about those type winches they have no reverse line let out. they just free spool til you start winching. Plus they are alot more bulky. But onething however you go about powering your winch is up to what works best for you. When you go about mounting your winch get a gvood pre-made winch bumper, But if you go about building your own besure not to weld any of the mounting surface to the frame nor weld your winch to the plate. Besure you bolt these parts so your plate will be able to flex. If you weld it the stress of winching will put stress on welded mounting points and may bust off whiled winching. 100 or so pounds of winch flying thru the air ain't good.
I ain't if your Bronco is the fullsize bronco or a bronco II. If it's a fullsize bronco it weights alot more then ya think. Where a good ****** block or Winch kit with blocks come in handy for doubling the pull power of the winch.
it a big bronco, and yeah its probably bigger than I think, but no where near the size of the f250 i drove, nor the 4 door yukon Im gonna be wheelin with. and also this is a bolt in operation, just for the sake of flex.

squeek, squeek (wiggling my finger in my ear) excuse me?
Did you say it will be need to be able to pull a yukon out of a deep rut?
NP 435's have the pto output on the passenger side I think, So do most of the other big truck tranny's. For the money you could probably sell the winch and sink another couple hundred into buying the right thing to start with. Harbor freight is selling an 8000 lb electric right now for under 300 dollars. Don't know about the quality, but the price is definitely good.
