how much oil does the 460 take when changing the oil this is an 85 F-250/c6?
And what are you guy's running in regards to oil weight. i was thing about going to delo 400 15w-40 but we can get some cold winters here in Idaho. Any suggestions?
should be about 6 quarts. i run valvoline 10w30 in my truck and i live in oklahoma so its fairly warm, i ran 10w40 for a while seemed to run fine even when we had the bad ice and snow storm. I think i would run 10w30 in the winter and maybe use 10w40 in the summer.
Clyde doesn't get a lot of miles but when it does it's usually under some type of a load. The last couple of long vacations with the 5th wheel have been during July ... hard work and high temperatures. In the winter it pretty much "stays in the barn" so I get by with a little thicker oil. I'd use the 10-30 version if I ran it regularly when it's cold.
Six quarts of Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic and a Motorcraft FL1-HP oil filter. The filter is high capacity and high pressure, designed for racing and highly recommended for 460s. I've used Mobil 1 since I got the truck. Without the Mobil 1 I think I might have fried the engine a couple years ago in Nebraska. Plugged up radiator during 110+ temps, pretty ugly. Engine coolant temps running 235-240* on a mechanical gauge. I kinda view the added expense as insurance.
I think that you can get by with 10-30 or 10-40 if it is a strong motor.... my 80 with a 302 is a worn out slug....I run 20-50 year round and have never had a problem in the winter....
I have a buddy that is a diesel mechanic and he says not to run dello or Rotella in a gas engine...he says that it is not formulated gor gas motors... i do not know if this is true or if he is full of S*** .. he is one of those guys that knows everything....just ask him..
I run 15w-40 oil in my 460 with no issues. I work for a large oil company and our motor oil research people told me that the diesel oil starts out better grade of oil then the gas engine oil finishes at
Motor oils all have an API rating shown inside a circle on the backs of the containers. Sx ( x being the version or generation: SF, SL, etc.) oils are for gas engines, Cx oils are rated for diesel engines. Many good oils are rated dual rated, CD/SL for example. Just be sure that you use oil rated for the proper application. I'm sure there's better explanations on the oils and lubrications section of the forum.
I use Mobil 15w40 in the Ford and the Dodge Caravan. No problems at all. I use Mobile in the Jetta because I hate changing the oil. VW actually recommends 15w40 for conventional oils in all of their "GAS" engines.
The minivan HAD a valve noise from hell but one month after switching from 10w30 oil (Mobile, Mobile 1, Valvoline Max life, Pennzoil), it's gone. Hummmmm. They say the detergency of the Delvac it much better. I though it could be the extra viscosity but that wouldn't have taken a whole month. Maybe it cleaned a dirty passage???
The Ford leaks like a sieve so using the less expensive Delvac 1300 is smart for me. I really have to get that oil pan gasket changed
