I have come across a SROD out of a 1979 mustang with a 6cyl. I’ve been doing some reading and some say that it’s a “weak” transmission. But also some say that it’s fine for normal driving. All the threads I’ve read are around ten years old so maybe there are more people around who have done it.
I currently have a 3speed on the column and a mostly stock 352 aside from an RV cam. I occasionally get on the gas a little in second gear but nothing like “racing” it since it’s a truck.
Any opinions? Just entertaining the idea, ideally I want a t85 but like the idea of where the shifter would be in the floor.
In 1979, a friend bought a BN Capri (Fox Body car, same as Mustang) with the SROD, 302 2bbl, in those years a 302 mad maybe 150 HP, not a lot of torque.........anyways in the first several years, he had it out twice, to change shift forks. they would get tweaked, and cause it to pop out of gear under deceleration.
I can't imagine one having any kind of a lifespan behind an FE. There are better options out there, so IMO, I'd keep looking.
On another note, the same friend had a mid nineties F350 Crewcab 4WD, 460EFI/5 spd (ZF), this goes back a few years, but the last report I had he was @ 470,000 kilometers, still on the original trans.
I would like to do a 5speed also, but a long tail shaft design with the shifter in the rear.
reason being is my interior is going along the lines of 66 mustang inside with 66 fort truck outside.
but not against keeping it on the column with a t85, if I go that route once I get buckets I’ll find a center console that resembles from a mustang/ probably make custom.
trucks got a long way to go but you probably see the idea, classic cruiser with a little different spin rather than a typical f100
The aluminum cased version of that trans would probably have a short life.
There is an iron cased, side shifted model found in vans and some pickups. It looks just like a toploader out of a'60s performance car except there is a little bump in the case.
Those are stronger as long as you don't lay into the 4th gear to hard.
I think unlike the car transmissions where the shifter would be to the rear on the tail housing a truck transmission like the ZF would be top center over the main body.
Now part of the problem I see with any 5sp over drive transmission is the bell housing is part of the transmission, ok not the T5 but the shifter is in the tail housing.
Also the clutch is hyd, so you would need to add a hyd clutch master.
Besides the ZF that is used in the later trucks also look for a M5OD-R2 used in the 150 & LD 250 trucks.
There is a member in the 80-86 truck area that uses the M5OD-R2 in place of 3 on the tree in his 84 F150 with a little built up 302 and loves it.
But again it was from a 351 motor truck going to a 302 so both were SB motors don't know if you could mate it to your motor?
Just my .02

Just remembered if you go to late on the transmission they don't have a speedo hook up as it read off a ring tone on the rear end.

I had one in a '79 Cobra and it sucked, had it repaired twice. Ended up putting a C5 in it and never looked back. The car ended up with a 357 clevor and the C5 had no problem handling the 7000RPM shifts!
