Hi guys,
just bought my first ranger few days ago, and it’s my first pick-up truck. Fairly newbie on all those topics. The model is a 2000 xlt.
I found myself stuck this morning in a nice mix of snow, water and mud. So I put the truck in neutral and turn the switch to 4 wd low. The light turned on but only the passenger side front wheel was spinning while the driver side front wheel wasn’t doing anything. Not that good for getting out of trouble. Anything that I should know about 4 wd. Is mine broken?
thanks guys.
Your truck likely has open diffs so at best it will power 1 front and 1 rear tire in really slippery conditions, and worse yet the power will always go to the tires with the least traction. Did you have that in your situation? If so there may be nothing wrong with your truck except that it could perhaps use some better tires for that type of terrain.

thanks for your reply.
It seem that the only wheel that was spinning was the one with the least traction.
What is the advantage of 4 wheels drive if all the wheels are not working at the same time when needed 🤔
In situations with wheels spinning,
a lite foot on the brake pedal, while also giving it gas
sometimes will even out the differentials & get all four wheels moving.
