I was wondering if anyone has had their wastegate stay open until motor warms up? My truck does not boost when cold only when it reaches normal operating temp. The wastegate stays open at partial throttle. When i push pedal halfway or more boost is reading on the gauge. Is wastegate accuator sticking? Please give me your opinions on this. Thanx!
Since you are up north I'll assume the outside temp is below 40 degrees when this happens? If that's the case then it is not the wastegate but rather the exhaust backpressure valve, and it sounds like it is functioning normally.
Sorry, and yes i do. The temp gets to upper 40's day and falls to 25-30 at night. I park in my garage which is fully insulated. I am new to the diesel and just question the process. I start it in the morning and let it idle for about 10-15 min. The temp in my garage is around 50 during this time of year (falls to around 35 in winter). I was wondering if there is a temp sensor and if so what temp does it reach to be satisfied. It is just a little thing that has got me thinking. I hear the exhaust gases rushing out of the tailpipe and it sounds like i should be moving along, but no boost is reading until it reaches normal operating temp. I appreciate your knowledge.
Yep, it's the backpressure valve. There is a flapper valve in the exhaust flow (bolted onto the back of the turbo), it's purpose is to help the engine warm up faster during cold weather operation.
