In the process of pulling the c6 out of my 66 250. Prev owner installed Lincoln 460/c6 - very little room between top of bell housing and firewall. Looks like fame member under front of tranny pan was removed for this install? Anyone out there experience this tight fit issue?
That is the way these trucks are. A C6 bell is too large to come out the bottom without removing that crossmember. Only the trucks that came from the factory with an auto trans had removable crossmembers. You are fortunate if the PO made that crossmember removable. Your only other choice is to remove the engine and trans together out the front. But with a 460 that will be real tight.
I cannot get the tranny back far enough to get it out
Make sure your torque converter hub isn't stuck in the back of the crankshaft or something. Or, support the back end of the engine so it doesn't drop down, making the bell closer to the firewall, geometrically speaking.
If none of the above whoever put it in may have put the mounts to far back...
The crossmember in my 72 is two pieces. I pull it out and bolt it back together if I need to pull the trans or the under-crossmember headers.
No issues with steering before or after.
