Hi guys, I have a Ford truck again! I bought a 2017 f150 eco boost GTDI with 24000 miles. The Ford website with my vin input said it was a GTDI. Axle ratio is a L9. That’s a 3.55 electronic locking differential. According to my owners manual that engine has a GCWR of 14000 lb to 15200lb for towing. I believe it came with the heavy duty tow package . I have the original window sticker that says tow package $895.00. Pretty sure I don’t have the max package because that’s a bigger differential rating plus a larger fuel tank. I have everything else back up assist, trailer brake controller, both harness plugs and I believe led lights in the rear. It’s also a 4 wheel drive truck with the 4x4 off road decal but I don’t think that means anything. Car max wasn’t much help and waffled on a 5000 lb tow rating and 7000 lb tow rating. The dealership it was purchased from in 2017 isn’t returning my calls about this truck and my local Ford dealer was short with me and said I was around 11000lb. All I really care about is 7000lb. I’m not going to be trailering anything heavier than that. I’m going to retire soon and looking at vintage campers. Most of those are a dry weight of 2500 to 3200 that I’m looking at. But hey it sure would be nice to know what the actual rating is. , any thoughts?
Whiskey, it sure is. I think the only thing any of us can do is to find someone knowledgeable and honest and willing to take the time to help you. Muhford was super. I think maybe my best bet would be to take it to an RV dealership and ask them. Throw a bone at em and tell them I’ll be in the market soon for an RV.
If you are planning on getting on the road with a trailer of any kind, JOIN an RV forum. Those guys know that stuff inside out. It is very confusing finding out what you can safely/legally tow as every truck is slightly different. A 4X4 has slightly less tow capacity because the weight of the 4X4 hardware detracts from the payload capacity. Some one with a St Bernard dog loses more payload than someone with a Chihuahua ! Every option eats payload.
Payload is your serious number to worry about, not TOW capacity. Research "tongue weight" that is important too. A trailer often puts between 10-15 percent of its own fully loaded weight onto the tongue of the truck impacting payload.
Payload when thinking towing is the combined weight of passengers + all cargo + tongue weight https://www.curtmfg.com/towing-capacity start here to get an understanding and the only thing I can and will promise you IT IS CONFUSING. Remember, you need specific information for YOUR truck and its particular build. Even your tire ratings impacts safe towing There are no generalities if you want to be safe and have a long and happy retirement.
GCWR isn't on the door frame stickers for my F-350 either. Not on the window sticker either. I had to figure it out based on the Ford towing guide. Ford doesn't make it easy.
Whether you have the 2.7 Ecoboost or the 3.5 Ecoboost, 7,000 pounds should easily be fine. muhford's 10,700-11,900 seems accurate for the 3.5 Ecoboost. If you ever get around to hooking up that much weight, some research, and maybe an F-250+, is warranted.
