i am taking my old 72 f-100 down to the bones.
my oldest son will be 16 soon and has been eyeballing it since he was a baby. it has a 360 engine but i would be rebuilding anyway so now is the time to decide motors. my buddies go from one exstreem to the other some say 460 others 302.
no one has good things to say about the 360 but it always got me where i was going.
a 302 doesnt sound too bad considering it will have a 16 year olds foot in it every time he gets out of dad's ear shot.
guess i just like to hear other opinions.

Why not a happy medium like a 390, all you need are the crank and rods. Going to another engine family will require lots of changes and hassles getting parts that you already have for the FE.
Yep, get a 390 crank and rods and a rebuild kit for a 390. You might want to check your 360 block and see if it's not bored to the limit already which is around .060". 360 and 390 blocks are the same and have the same bore of 4.05".
well..Becarefull..if your worried bout power and speed 390 has alot of it(know from experience).....I dont see any problems with 360 they run good and a long time and if you want power you can find parts to get it.....if power doesnt matter then 390 is great motor I think 460 are alittle over rated they are bark and no bite(lots of wieght) unless your building a race car......just a thought....
I've had several motors in my 69 Ranger and I like the 360. I know everyone thinks their junk but mine has always run really good. I've got a set of 10:5 to 1 pistons, a crane cam, headers and a Holley 650. Other than that it's all stock. Not sure what it is about this combo but it goes. If your crank and rods are good I'd stick with the 360.
I'd stay with the 360. I've never come across a junk one yet. Seen alot of 302's that were, probably because people forget that if you take care of your equipment it will take care of you.
390's are good to, lot of power.... then again, it is for your boy.
I'd say rebuild the 360. Get a crane 343901 cam for it, a 4 barrel intake like the edelbrock performer, (if it doesnt already have a 4 barrel intake, it probably has the stock 2 barrel), a Holley 600 vacuum secondary, and a good set of headers. That should be more than enough to get your kid in trouble. I know mine makes plenty of power, and that's with a stock cam!
If you're really concerned about how much your kid gets on it, Holley makes a 390cfm 4 barrel that would limit his fun, if you get my drift...
i think you guys may have saved me a wad of cash and a lot of trouble. im now thinking i will just stick with the 360. i can worry about changing to a different size motor after he blows this one up. with a new intake and carb. and a set of headers and maybe some of those chrome valve covers he will think he's got the baddest ride in town. lol
ok. here and idea be very serious and say how much you like the truck and how much it meens to you and teach about it and show him how much money you can realy put in to theese thangs i know when i first started I could be hard on it with my dad and we both liked the power but not all then time mostly after i started to have to pay for parts if i broke them i still punch it and Peel out and Hot Rod around town but i never give it more than it can handle and i know if i break this truck it is not go to the dealer and get a new one it not replacible.....just a thought
