TPMS sensor fault after wheel replacement

Had some damage to one of my wheels. Found a factory take off wheel tire and replaced mine with that. Didn’t do anything with the sensors because it seemed to communicate right away and showed all tire pressures. On the way to work I get tpms sensor fault message and that wheel/tire shows blank on the info screen. Do I need to go to the dealer for this or is this something I can take care of on my own?

It takes some drive time for the sensor to be read. What you saw right after install was likely the last reading from the previous wheel. After driving a bit the truck did not pick up a reading from the replacement wheel and threw the error message. Don't know why the sensor is not being picked up. Ford or a local tire shop can verify if the sensor is operating correctly and try resetting the system.

Am I able to reset it myself or are there special tools? Replacement came off a 2018 mins is a 2017. Are they all on the same frequency channel or whatever it’s called?

A new sensor usually needs to be programmed to the vehicle. Most tire shops can do this, even Walmart.

The TPMS needs to be programmed to the truck.

would going through the tpms reset procedure work? It’s not a new sensor. I got a replacement used factory wheel tire from a 2018 and put it on my 2017. Does it still have to be programmed at a dealer or tire store?

If it isn't a new sensor, meaning it came from the old wheel and it's your OEM sensor that came with the truck, and it isn't responding, then it may have been damaged.

its not my original sensor from my 2017. It’s the original sensor for the 2018 truck it came from.

That's what I originally thought, but you weren't clear. You need to have it programmed to the truck. Not going to work until you do that.

Is there a way to turn off the tpms system so there is no dash light until I can get it programmed?

Yes, but only by using forscan. Check out the forscan sticky at the top of this forum

Guess I could put the original rim in the bed and that would make the light go off?

Maybe. Usually, the sensors have to sense rotation before they turn on.

The cheap TPMS tools found on Amazon also work well and are about 13.00 if you don't want to do forscan.
