I added the tail gate assist shock.
I noticed when the tail gate was down there was some slack in the cable closest to the shock. The other cable was tight. Seems to me that the shock is holding all the weight on one side.
Is this normal? Is it safe?
Sit on the tailgate and see if you have tension in both cables. One side being just a tiny bit looser than the other isn't a big deal. Your tailgate does flex and, once under load, the cables will even up in a hurry.

I installed the DZ assist a couple of years ago and mine is the same way. No issues at all.
I installed the OEM tail gate assist on my 2022 f-350. Very very disappointed and ordered a DEE-Zee external one. The Shock seems to work going up, but has no damper coming down. The tail gate just slams down, and this is in fact an OEM part. It makes the tail gate extremely heavy to shut. Does anyone have a solution or has had this problem. I'd love to replace just the shock, but have no idea where I could find one. Unfortunately it too late to return it, so I'll probably just disconnect it and use the DEE-Zee.
is it a super duty? maybe I just got a faulty shock.. but I hate to spend the money on a new one. I was thinking the tail gate was just too heavy on the superduty

By chance, did you install it upside down? Or does it matter? IIRC, when I installed mine (which is also OEM) it did specify to install in a certain orientation, and being that yours is hard to shut but falls down without hesitation, maybe it could be upside down? It wouldn't be hard to just pop it off, flip it over, reinstall it and check it. Also, FWIW, the shock makes no difference that I can tell when closing the tailgate. When closing my tailgate, it seems to weigh the same and takes the same amount of effort as before I installed the strut, but of course it opens slow and easy.
You know, you could be right.. Although I did follow the instructions and the picture, but the way it acts, it would make sense that it is backwards. I'll reverse it tomorow. hope it fixes it. I'll send the DEE-Zee back lol.. Good ol Amazon
Thanks.. I should have thought of that.
