I have a 2003 Explorer with blinker issues, originally thought it was the multi function switch in the column, put a new one in. Still have intermediate blinkers. So bought a new flasher. Installed that, still the same thing. The hazards work good, but the blinkers do not. The right blinker works correctly 80% of the time. The left blinker works maybe 5% of the time. The wiring diagram in the repair manual I have is no good. Anyone have any advice on this??
Small bit of more info, the left blinker, you can hear the flasher clicking most of the time, but the indicator in the dash and the bulbs outside don’t flash. The right blinker most of the time the indicator in the dash works but the flasher clicks all the time. Both indicators flash, and all the lights flash with the hazards all the time.
For some model years there was an issue with a wire that would commonly break in the steering column because it was too short and, if the tilt steering column was adjusted frequently, would tug on the wire and accelerated it breaking. I thought it was the generation prior to yours, but might be worth checking.
Most of your symptoms would point to a faulty multifunction switch (MFS). The flasher relay is between the battery and the MFS, and the hazard lights use a separate set of contacts in the MFS and within the flasher relay than the turn signals, so you're already replaced the two simplest and most likely suspects. Really your only symptom that doesn't point to the MFS is that you already replaced it and the operation didn't change. How comfortable are you with a multimeter and backprobing the MFS with it still connected?
I’m perfectly comfortable doing multi meter work. I figured all would be good with replacing the two parts I did.
I suppose I should add, that this vehicle had a remote start in it, but that stopped working and causing a no crank issues, so I uninstalled the dealership installed remote starter, and fixed the “start” wire in the steering column. But didn’t see any bad wires that went to the multi function switch. But I will most certainly have to have a second look. The blinker issue was present before I took the remote start out though.
Since you're comfortable working with a multimeter, I think backprobing the connected MFS may be the next logical step to see if the inputs and outputs are all working they way they should be.
