Preparing to pull the pig

Its been a long while since I have been here. I moved from Arizona to Arkansas. Rented for 6 months and got in a house last August. Shipped my diesel trucks to the new place all the way from Az. The 7.3 has a leaking front cover and I'm getting ready to pull it in the next few weeks. I picked up a 2 ton shop crane and a 1 ton engine stand. While its out I'm going to go through the whole thing. I will be removing the strictly diesel dipstick fix and tig welding in the weldable option.Just figured I would say hi and ease myself back into the group. So hi.

Sounds like a fun project. Did the dip stick mod not work?

Hopefully you can get the lift high enough to pull the engine. I looked at mine and I'd need a gantry hoist for sure.

Dipstick mod worked fine. I just figured that once I have the engine out I may as well get rid of an oring and replace it with a weld that I know will never leak. I hope I can get the engine high enough to not remove anything but fan and radiator. I plan on leaving the Zf5 and trying to stab the engine back in. Im going to helicoil the front cover where the hpop bolts seeing as I removed and reattached the hpop a bunch of times thinking the leaks was coming from that gasket. But after running the engine with a camera I could see the leak coming from the front cover.

Mine was leaking in the same spot. I just finished mine. When you pull it out move engine counter clockwise on a angle,,, so if your looking at the engine from the front,,, move the front to the right,,, just watch out for the flywheel hitting the wires and wiper motor on the firewall. Other that that take your time, inch your way out and you should be fine. Not sure what hoist you have but I slung mine tight and I had 2" raise height left. The engine is very tall.

As for the tranny,, I pulled mine out of the way. The engine is a bear to install as it is,,, I think with the tranny in would just be to much of a pain. Mine is also 2wd so if yours is 4wd it would be a bit more work to remove.

Good Luck.

Thanks man. I finally have a barn that I can do work in. When I was In Az I was doing all this work and trying to hide from my HOA. So I would have to roll the truck back in at night it was a massive pain. I did my LB7 injectors the same way. It was horrible. Here I can take my time and get where I get and not worry about it. Mine is 4x4. Funny thing is I put the new trans and clutch in and about 5 miles later the leak started. My luck.

I've been able to pull a 7.3 with a 2 ton cherry picker. Pull the front wheels and set the ball joints down on a thin block of wood. I keep the A/C connected, just use a buddy to help it clear. I like to pull the trans back too.

I like to pull the radiator before starting the operation as well. I would hate to poke a hole trying to shimmy the hog out of its hole.
