Since the rims/tires seem to be implicated in this, and since the EB has different rims than the XLT, I want to take a poll to see if there is a concentration of this problem on one vehicle or the other.
Yes, my XLT vibrates after 60 MHP and up and shimmies after 75 MPH and up. The higher the speed the more vibration and shimmy. It's a 2-wheel drive, don't know if this makes a difference. Also, there's probably a twice as many XLT's as EBs on the road, so take this into consideration when looking at your overall results.
Yes that's a good point TB the ratio would have to be 5:1 or 4:1 in this poll to be meaningful. I just had a hunch that if the problem is crappy rims, we might see the majority of the problem on one vehicle or the other since they have different rims. The other possibility of course is that all the rims suck.
I've got an EB4X4,all 4 of my wheels were replaced under warranty due to the clearcoat chipping or peeling around the center caps and the Conti tires were remounted and balanced and put back on my truck. I experienced no vibration(after getting the front axle growl repaired) before or after the wheels were replaced, and I had it up to 105mph for about 10 miles once after the wheels were replaced. My build date was Nov.14,2002.
You may want to add XLT FX4 to the list. It has yet a 3rd different rim. Mine shakes between 72 and 78...but only after a tire rotation...before the rotation, no problems...
Had the vibration. Returned to dealership 5 times. Finally replaced two wheels and tires and seemed to fix the probelm. There is a little shimmy every now and then but i dont know if its the expy or me being overly concerned. Anyway just my two cents. Jim
I have a 2003 XLT 4x4 (build date 11/02) and am experiencing a pretty severe vibration at 50 mph. It seems to peak there and then around 80mph. Sometimes it will go away if I engage 4H at 50 mph, but not always. I can feel it in the pedals and steering wheel and even hear it inside the vehicle. It is driving me nuts and the dealer says everything is fine. It sems to be worse when the vehicle is run for the first 10-20 minutes. The transmission aslo clunks on downshifts at low throttle. By the way the A/C hisses to. Any help would be appreciated
pdqford,
Yes and it didn't help. My dealer also has installed 3 different sets of tires and the vibration hasn't changed but the shimmie is a little better but it is still present.
DN27,
Wow! THREE different sets of tires! Did the Road Force Balancer indicate that all three sets were bad?
And it didn't find a problem with your wheels either (radial or lateral runout)?
If the Road Force Balancer moved the tire around the rim to where there was less than 20lbs of imbalance, the problem is not in the tire/wheel.
With the tire/wheel 'Road Force Balanced', you might ask the dealer to then do an "on vehicle" wheel balance and that would tell them if the rotors are causing the vibration.
pdqford,
I don't actually know what the reports said I never saw them. I know they kept my Expy for 30 days trying to rid it of the shimmie and now I have different tires on it and the work order says they put 3 sets of tires on it. I do know one of the wheels that was in front is now on the back ( I can tell this easily because of the brake dust on it ) so I'm sure they found something although it didn't fix it.
