I just joined FTE after lurking for a while. I am impressed with the members' interactions on this forum in comparison to other forums so I chose FTE.
I just purchased a 1987 F-150 XLT Lariat 4x4 regular cab that has a bad 5.0. I am hoping to get her "fixed" up and get her running to use as a weekend driver. I look forward to meeting you all.
PS: If anyone knows of a reliable used 5.0 engine for sale that is compatible with my vehicle, please let me know!
As you mentioned, lots of folks here are experts with these trucks. If you think your 5.0 might be fixable, why not post your symptoms here and see if you can save it. If it can't be saved your best bet is try and get one locally to eliminate shipping and if a warranty is offered with a motor, local can honor it without shipping. Sandy

sandymane,
The prior owner overheated the engine and I suspect the heads are warped. The motor starts but overheats immediately. It also has a flywheel that is missing teeth as he also replaced the starter and the first starter he purchased was the wrong one and probably damaged the ring gear. He replaced it with the proper starter but now it is grinding. I know that at the very least I have to take the heads off and get them rebuilt and also have to remove the engine to get to the flywheel, Still, I wouldn't know if the block is damaged, although I know that one exhaust manifold is cracked (perhaps due to the overheating), I was wondering if it is best to just replace the engine with a used one.
With so many possible needs for having to outsource work and unknown other work, I think replacement is probably the best bet. I was hoping you just had running issues that forum help would get you going. Let's see what any other folks have to say. Wish I could have been more help. Let us know what you end up doing. Regards Sandy
Miles worse case heads could be, warped, buddy's got a 180kmi, 5.0L running hot, (wrong rotation water pump), drove for 3 months, adding water, until he figured it out, got gasket set, and new pump, checked heads with straight edge, put back together, drove it 2 yrs, before rebuild. $65 1987 FORD F 150 Fel-Pro 260-1169 Fel-Pro Engine Gasket Kits | Summit Racing
