Finally, after years of testing and fine tuning, Oshkosh has been awarded the contract to build the replacement vehicles for the aged and very tired LLV's.
Oshkosh is the designer and builder of the Humvee, the MRAP and all of their variants as well as the replacement for the Humvee.
Interesting new vehicles to be sure. Being in the windshield business I've seen the current vehicle replacement glass---kinda weird from a "normal" windshield installation.
Looking at the huge piece in these new ones is a huge WOW from glass installers.
I like the ability to be retro-fitted with different drive trains---if electric becomes more viable switching out the internal combustion engines for electric might be "easier".
I'm seeing a lot of complaints online about the new vehicle but I don't understand why. Most of us are driving 30 year old LLV's that are basically perfect for the job but there's no safety equipment, ac or other modernizations. Some are driving Ram Promasters and some are driving Mercedes Metris vans, both are not truly 100% suitable for the job but have other strengths such as ac, front wheel drive and safety equipment.
One of the frontrunners for final consideration was a company that wanted to take a Ford Transit van front clip and graft a box on the rear. The Transit vans much like the Promasters are hard to ingress / egress as they are high off the ground and too many carriers are injuring their ankles and knees with constant in an out all day. What a Charlie Foxtrot.
I think the only thing missing on this new vehicle is that it's not front wheel drive or all wheel drive.
