Time For New Tires

My '17 SRW F350 has just hit 38,000, and the factory tires (LT275/70R18E) are starting to look like replacement time. I tow a travel trailer occasionally, and sometimes gravel/dirt roads, but primarily drive on pavement. I'm thinking an all terrain or all season tire.. what do you guys recommend. Thanks in advance!

All good answers, Yokohama X-AT, Cooper AT3 XLT, Falken Wildpeak AT3W are all excellent all terrain tires with good road manners. I would recommend Toyo AT III also, but they are getting hard to find right now.

If you want more than just an opinion, go to Consumer Reports. They have great unbiased reviews of truck tires, both all season and AT. Personally, I tow a lot and spend 95% on highways. I always go with a quiet all season tire. Continental TerrainContact HT is their #1 recommendation. For AT tires, they recommend the same tire in the AT configuration.

Yes, buy AT tires with 3 peak emblem on the side wall. They have done well for me. There’s a bunch of tires in this category.

My trucks run BFG RUGGED TRAIL T/A, and I’m very happy with them. My 17 F350 DRW averages around 75k on the drives and 65-70k on the steers, they have good traction in snow, ok in mud, run pretty quiet on the road; and I’m not easy on the trucks at all.

...the factory Michelin’s on the other hand...steers were completely worn out at 18k, and the drives by 25k.

The BFG Rugged Trails only go up to a 17" wheel and the OP stated a SRW with 18" wheels, so I'm not sure why this is a recommendation here.

The other options above are the who's who of AT tries that get brought up every month when this question resurfaces. I ran Falken Wildpeak A/T3W on my '05 F-150. They wore like iron. But the tires were really heavy. My factory 275/70R18 Goodyear ATs are nearing EOL and will be worn out at 35,000 miles, so I will not be getting them again. I'll probably go back to the Falkens due to the value pricing on those tires (in the 18" wheel size in the stock and 295/70 variations) -- they're quite a bit cheaper than the Cooper, Toyo, BFG, etc. mentioned above. All good tires, but I'll save a couple of bills with the Falken Wildpeaks.

That may be, but the OP stated clearly that he has 18" wheels ... pricing on tires for 20" wheels isn't particularly relevant. I edited my post to clearly state the conditions of my "value" comment, though. For the OP's 18" wheel size, the Falkens end up in the ~$270 range and the BFGs are at ~$320 for the 295/70R18, which is a pretty common size upgrade folks make with otherwise factory suspension. Most of those other options are north of $300.

I also just checked the bone stock 275/70R18 size. And, similar to your 20" wheel example, the Falkens are not value priced anymore. In that stock size, there are many other brands that are both cheaper and as good as the Falkens. Things have changed! Falken sits at ~$270 and BFG is $255. In fact, some of thse stock sizes are so cheap that I'm now rethinking my decision to move to a larger size! I'm not a huge fan fo the stock size and another inch would look better ... but not for $400!

So, there you go. Depending on size, the pricing can vary quite a bit.
