2020 F250 7.3 with 13k miles, 10k+ towing TT. Truck has been great with no issues. The only thing I noticed is a occasional smell of what I would describe as hot brakes. I have never slammed on my brakes and haven’t been in any situation where I have abused them. Dealer says everything looks fine and cannot find any problems. I’ve checked the serpentine belt, looked for anything on the motor or exhaust, but can’t seem to find the source of this smell. I get this smell almost every time I drive the truck, whether pulling or not. Anyone experience a similar situation? Thanks
There are only two things that smell like heated brakes...brakes and clutches..since the trucks are no longer manual..Im going to guess you have a parking brake out of adjustment or a caliper sticking. Did the dealer show you the remaining amount of pads for each caliper ? ( usually in millimeters ) because if one has a substantial amount of less pad I would think that's the suspect caliper IMO
rotor could show more discoloration from heating up...just things I would look for
For when you are pulling; the anti sway system for pulling trailers actives brakes dependent on input from several sensors and systems. It's come up before of a brake smell when pulling trailers. Some have had early brake wear - others claim 70k+ miles without having to change brakes with consistent trailering. I would just say overall, I do notice a lot of brake dust just from normal driving my truck, which is also a largely publicized complaint.
Thanks for the responses, I will look into the sticky caliper/emergency brake. I will also look at the rotor temperatures when I get the smell. I noticed initially that I had a lot of front brake dust, but I seems to have subsided with miles. Hopefully I can track this issue down, got some major trips planned for the summer and don’t need any problems.
My truck has 5k miles on it..the excessive brake dust drives me crazy..mostly front wheels as expected. I will get ceramic pads when they get changes out. Good luck and hope you resolve your concerns
also, you can buy one of those laser temp gauges ...when you smell the brakes maybe you can shoot wheels / rotors with the laser to compare readings and see if one jumps out at you
