That "gear looking" thing is actually called a reluctor.

The best thing for removing it is a small battery cable puller. It's cheap, and won't harm the reluctor.

thats it...the stator, and im pretty sure its points. at least they called it the stator in the chiltons book...god help that book. lol
oh and yea i had to get a small gear puller to get it off.. but the shaft of the gear puller would go down into the shaft of the distributor so i had to use a nickel to cover the hole for me to get ne leverage.

the 79 f350 with the spare tire in the side of the bed that you bought is called a "Super Camper Special" the camper special was an option but the super camper special moved the rear axle back for better weight distribution for towing a 5th wheel trailer. it came stock with a Dana 70 rear with 3:73 or 4:10 gears for better power while towing. i have this rear in my supercab 4x4. i've seen about 15 or so of these trucks here in Phx in the last 2 years. even one in the junk yard with a rust free body. when i went back to buy it the guy CRUSH IT. i was SICK when the guy told me that. he said he only keeps the vehicals for about 60 day.

Hey guys!

well, the weekend was a sucess.

i put in a new computer module (*green streak that is a great idea to have a few kickin' round*). the new one cost me in canadian dollars $85, i guess for those of you who aren't communists that is about $42 USD. it is a brand-spankin' new niehoff, but boy did it heat up really quick, is there a better place to put it so it stays cool, other than the fender?!?!

hey jimmy, about the pick-up coil in the distributor, that is a buggar to work with ain't it? i looked over my repair manual, but the bloody book kept talkin about a computer module, but i remembered what you said about old trucks being around before computers were invented, so i tried an abacus, but that didn't work worth a damn! also to that post the administrator writes about not needing the computer...how does that work? i inspected for broken wires in the distributor, but they seemed fine...the vac advance plate seemed a little stuck at first, i sprayed some WD40, on it the night before i started it up, was that a good idea or not, i figured it'd loosin it up a little...i wanted to replace the pick up coil, but an old guy down the road mentioned that i'd need a special puller for the tool. now i just read about 5 minutes ago that wezol says he needed a special tool..how much did the new coil cost you to purchase? also, i think at canadian tire (*a local automotive place*) the coil comes in a kit with a reluctor or stator wheel..that gear...after i lift the two bolts holding in the magnet, is there a retaining ring or something holding the coil down? i have no experience with distributors, but i see that i should become an expert real quick if i plan on ever driving again....

to note: the 350 has a dana70 3.73 rear end, and i appreciate F350SuperCab4x4Senior User for letting me know why it has such a long wheel base for a single cab. i'm tellin ya', i went to a place here near toronto that seels aftermarket body panels and the guy ain't never heard of a truck with a spare tire compartment in the side of the box. i took some pictures of my trucks but i don't know how to include them on the website,,,,,i guess i could always tape them to my abacus, but that sure a shootin' won't help you folks to visualize my worries!

hey, one more thing, the heater is plugged up in my 79 and i need to get it out to have it recored, does anyone have any tips (*like nickel or penny tools*) they might know about to help make the job a little easier?

oh, and since you guys all know about these things, the other thing is my steering.,....i got alot of play in it

wait!

i know these trucks are starting to sound like they don't even run cause i'm askin all these questions and what not, but you gotta believe that i've just made-due with these problems cause for real there is noone around here to talk about ford with, and i trouble shoot as best as possible, as well as tryin to save some bucks, but the trucks actually work!!

o.k. back to the steering wheel..lots of play and the recirculating ball steering gear has a flexible coupling on it, and that is where it leaks...has anyone heard of this problem? i can't see why the coupling would leak, but again, i haven had it apart before...i only had this truck four years or a bit more than that, but it was my daily driver until last month, so i couldn't take the chance a take it apart cause of work and what not.

thanks for your tips, i hope someone knows a little about the heater and the steering..

bobby

i went up to autozone to rent a small gear puller, u can deposit $20 and use the tool and when u bring it back u get ur money back. well the guy was out of em but he looked ne ways and found one that was missin a bolt and said that i could just have it if i wanted it. so i took it and drove up to lows and got a bolt and a nut to fit and its as good as new. but just go up to autozone..i dunno if there are ne in canada....tell em u wanna rent a gear puller and make sure u have $20 (thats american) and ull get ur money back when u bring back the tool. as for how much the pick-up coil costs...i cant quit remember cause it was a while ago but i think it was like $15-$20.

as for the ring holdin down the distributor....is it a small clip thats has a gap in it (like its not a whole ring, u can kinda pry it and make it bigger) and does it have a little filliment thing on top...if thats what im talkin about u dont have to take that off. i thought u had to at first and i did but in the end it didnt make the bit of difference, just alot of excess work and frustration.

on a note:
when ur pullin off the stator there should be a little TINY shaft lookin thing that sits in a groove b/t the stator and the distributor shaft. DONT LOOSE THAT lol. i didnt grab it fast enough and it fell. luckily i had a magnet on a stick and i was able to get it. that little tiny shaft is wedged b/t the stator and the distributor shaft to help hold the stator in one place.
good luck and if u have ne more questions just ask.

also keep us posted on how it goes.
