Newbie here-need E40d info
I have a 94 f150 4.9 with a e40d trans.I bought the truck with a studder under moderate acceration. If you ease it up to speed its fine only when you accelrate heavy it does it.
Im wanting to rebuild the tranny to handle towing\heavy loads.
Where can i get info on what may needed to be upgrade(newer tranny specs)?
What shift kit or valve body is recommend?
What parts normally fail?
Good torque convertor maker?
Im a tech by trade(ase master) but the e40d is new to me .
Thanks for any input.
Good tranny's overall, but serious shortcomings in durability. Seems that luck and the right guy at the assembly plant had a lot to do with how well they hold up. I've seen some go 150K with no problems. I had one that couldn't make 10K without burning up something new every time.
I am going to assume a engine studder, try pulling the codes off of the computer, and see what it says, i bet it is something like the egr sensors, or the throttle body position sensor.
You feel the shudder only at speeds above 45 or so.If the truck is dead still and you punch it,it runs fine. Its like the torque convertor is not unlocking like it should. It also does it more when its hot.
The only thing i have noticed (only had the truck a few days)is the temp is taking a long time to get warm(aka open tstat)I know that freaks the ecu out.Think it could effect the tranny being the tranny sensor is showing its hot but the ecu is still showing the truck to be cool.
If you don't get that taken care of, it will eat the t/c. The shudder is improper application of the lock=up clutch in the t/c. It causes slipping which eats the friction material. Which then sends particles through your tranny and smokes the internals and the t/c.

I can't really help you with your tranny issue, but that is one sweeeet Stang. I've always liked them in Oxford White. My 88 5.0 LX is the same color.

Thanks ,ive worked hard to get her to where she is now.She is at most of the ffw and NMRA races ,come by and say hi if you are ever at one.
Back to the tranny issue.
Willd, you are correct its the T\C.
i flushed the tranny yesterday 25qts of mercon and added a bottle of lubeguard.
The truck drives sooooooo good.It shifts like a brand new truck.
A friend at ford recalls a tsb on the t\c issue in 94~95 f150's(vibration \shudder).So im gonna install the updated t\c for safe measure.
But until then it shifts great now.
Thanks guys for all the help.Being new to the E40D it was just trial and error.
And a thanks to dieselzin for the diag stuff to help me run some test on the tranny.

I am going to try to get to the next outing in Bowling Green Ky. I am pretty sure that they have one there every year.

Nice track but getting in and out sucks.
Mine ran pretty good.I qualified 16th in a field of 57 .Drove her to the track from atlanta (23mpg on the hwy) and back and ran 11.60's all weekend(with nothing more than a rear tire change.(et streets).
But im stepping her up on the 15th (retune for more power). So my truck will be used to tow her out of town now.
Hope to see you there.

I sold the kit. It runs 13.10's without the bottle.
It is tired though, I git it HOT once when I put the first N0S kit on it and popped a head gasket. It only had the N0S solenoids and no fuel.
After It got over 270 degrees, the rings are a bit looser and the springs are a bit weaker. Still stock. I popped it at about 30,000 miles and the dealer fixed it under warranty. The next time I put the N0S back on, I used the kit with a fuel solenoid that tapped into the shrader valve. No problems after that, but I had done cooked her by then. It has no blowby and still holds over 50lbs of oil pressure all of the time, it just burns a little oil now.
I am saving my pennies for a 347 someday.
Good luck with the racing and I hope to see you in Bowling Green next time around.
Oh and the stock clutch went 130,000 miles after being abused by the N0S and slicks!!
Definately Ford Tough!!

Transgo makes a good shift kit, but they are not just a shift kit they also adress other problems that are inherent in each type of transmission. Most of their kits are best installed during an overhaul.
If you are interested in rebuilding your transmission check out your local vo-tech for classes. Here in Tulsa the vo-tech has a great transmission class. With the cost of transmission rebuilds over $1500 it only makes sense.
