I bought my truck last December, all was fine until this spring. I had made several high speed trips and the heat gauge stayed where it was supposed to. Then as the weather got a little warmer, the temp gauge would climb at higher speeds. At regular cruising speeds the temp was fine, soon as I step it up the heat starts to climb. I changed the thermostat, thinking it might be sticking, didn't help.
Could the water pump be weak or do I just need to have my rad cleaned out and new antifreeze put in.
Do not attempt to flush the system, because you can damage the oil cooler. Instead, remove the radiator and take it to a shop. They will be able to flow test it and rod out any clogged tubes.
Another method which I don't recommend is to remove the radiator and back flush it several times, then plug the two holes and and pour two bottles of flush in and fill with water. Let it soak all night and then flush both ways in the morning several times. I did this to mine and I had two tubes leak afterwards because my radiator must have been weak.
But all in all, your symptoms sounds like a plugged radiator.
I have had a somewhat similar experience. I just returned from an Idaho trip (elk hunt). The trip was approximately 1200 miles one way. I came up from southern California (San Clemente). I drove through the middle of the day north on the 15 through Nevada, Arizone and Utah. My temps climbed on the long grades where the turbo was boosting pretty much the whole way, the clutch fan would kick in and cool it down to where it started. On the return trip I drove at night pretty much the whole way and the truck temp would move way up to the A on NORMAL then the clutch fan would finally kick in. My question is do you think anything was wrong with the water pump, radiator? I thought everything worked the way it was supposed to but maybe you guys have some insight into that. Other than that the truck ran great and it was pretty much cruise control set to 70 and just letting the truck work. A couple of the big hills dropped me down to 60 but that is more the big tires and high gears 3.54's. I think I should be able to alleviate that with 4.56's or 4.88's. Anyway let me know what you think. Scotty
