Question 302 upgrades

OK guys I want to get more power out of my truck and I need advice. I have a 1991 f150 302 with an e4od, extended cab short bed. I already have a K & N drop in filter but I am looking at making a custom cold air intake. I also have a set of hooker long tube headers and 2 1/2 true dual exhaust. It isnt my daily driver so it can be down for a while. I was wanting to put on a set of gt-40 heads or twisted wedge. Has anyone used either of these? Pros and cons? after i get the heads I want to call some cam makers and let them chose the cam. Any other suggestions? Intakes that might be worth th money, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, or the oversized throttle bodies? Hope you guys have some ideas. And by the way an engine swap is not possible..........yet.

Thanks, Jack

New cam...

i know with the 2.9 you can drop in a new one and increase like 100 hp.

the dual exhaust should should sound awsome on it.

New ignition... uh...
Thats all i can think of at the moment.

Jack...looks like you are wanting some power! You have come to the right place...lots of people have a bunch of mods done like I do, Lexluthr, gamehunter, moneypit, and a few others.

I'd open up your air intake first. I seem to be the only one running a K&N FIPK w/ my MAF conversion but I like it. Opening up the air box by hacking the bottom off worked well for me until I went with the open element filter.

If you are hellbent on a head swap then look no further than the AFR-165 (airflowresearch.com) heads. Small port, high velocity, CNC ported OUT OF THE BOX. These heads are the best bang-for-the-buck on the market power wise. The TFS heads you are talking about are closer to a 180cc runner and are going to need more cam to run. TFS can grow with you also via porting but AFR's are also good for just over 100hp on an engine dyno vs stock E7TE heads! It really depends on if you want to stick with a 300-360cid motor or if you want more.

Something like a 214/220 will gain a good amount of power as will like a 208/214. Keep lift about .480-.520 to avoid Piston to Valve problems. Get it ground on at least a 112LSA perferably a 114LSA.

The Edelbrock truck EFI intake will make more torque as the runners are smaller...speeding up the velocity making more power. But the stock 302 one flows pretty good as is so that'd be lower on my list to swap. The larger TB probably should wait until you get a bigger cam. It will gain more topend power than anything. It won't hurt but that $300 is about 1/3 of a set of AFR heads.

I have an adjustbale fuel pressure regulator. It looks cool...I dropped my pressure a tad for a bit more power. I have a BBK that I bought for $40.

I also love my ASP underdrive pulley setup. It was $75. Quick cheap and easy power gain.

Electric fans are another option. I have a set going on in November I scooped up for $75 from an LS1 powered Camaro. They will be running off a Flex-A-Lite VSC. Same fan setup that I have on my Z71.

Hope that helps...
Eric
