I'm upgrading my distributor to A HEI distributor with a coil pack on top and for the life of me, I cannot get it to drop in the hole. I've measured the old and the new length and width. I'm on TDC and I cannot get it to drop all the way down over the pickup shaft. I get it all the way down but the last eighth of an inch. The new and old side by side My 1981 Ford F150 Ranger's 302 motor.
I do not have a split shaft but I'm as frustrated as I can possibly get. Any ideas for me?
Is the gear in the same location on the shaft on the new "HEI" dizzy as it was on your previous one? Measure from the O Ring groove to the bottom of the dizzy gear and see what you come up with.
Is this a name brand dizzy, or a cheap China unit?
Unfortunately, I was ignorant and running low on funds, so I bought a mid-of-the-road one and I believe it's Korean but it'll have to do, until I can safely recover from Christmas and moving.
So it's possible to get the shaft out without unbolting and lifting the motor?
mine was not in the oil pan
it was still in the channel where the distributor shaft goes preventing the distributor from going all the way in
i could see it with a light. I used a borescope my wife operated the cam and held the computer I could see the shaft I used the pen which fit over the shaft with the fuel hose for extension got the pen too capture the shaft moved the shaft over the pump installed shaft then used a coat hanger to push the shaft out of the pen
in post 6 I suggested that the shaft could still be saved
my borescope is about 4’ long I don’t know if a tool of some kind could find it and retrieve it
