it was much different in the USA back then our mass transit sucked and Fuel was cheap along with cars ....now days our Lazy kids can't even walk 1 block to a Convenience store...and most the Adults fall in that category too ..........

WE know it's cheap here compared to many other places around the world...well most of us do...not so sure about this new generation of Geniuses
Well cars and trucks are still different all across the EU. Most common trucks(if you can call them trucks) are Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi L200 and Mazda B series, engines range from 2.0-3.0 diesels. Most common cars are VW, Škoda, Audi, Fiat then BMW an MB and so on, engines in these are again in the 1.6-3.0l diesel or petrol sometimes you catch a glimpse of a 4.0 v8 and when mercury is in retrograde a 5.0 or 6.0 V12 i have personally never seen or heard one haha. However there is a big oldtimer community here. That is also the main reason i am buying a truck. Me and a friend are slowly working are way to our own oldtimer restoration shop.

Fuel used to be cheap here too, along with alot of other things then Slovenia went into the EU and things got a lot more expensive. We got a lot of good but a lot of bad at the same time.

Yeah when mommy and daddy buy **** for you, you sort of take things for granted.

If I was to be advised about things to pay attention to in these old IDI trucks, I would point out the glow plug system. I've had hot pins melt a connector, and hot wires melt insulation on 10 AWG automotive wire I used to jump the socket, fusing to the FSS wire, (causing my truck to not turn off and the glow plug relay to stay on). It seems a fair number of people use 4 or 6 AWG wire direct to the glow plug relay, bypassing the factory wiring. I am in the process of moving my relay to the passenger fender and going with the single 4 AWG wire with a big (250 amp minimum?) fuse.
Other than that, in thirty years, and 90K miles, I'm on my third E04D automatic transmission, so the manual may be the smart thing to do. I'm thinking of swapping to a manual myself, and may look at other threads on this, or statr one
Regarding cavitation, the test strips are used to make sure the anticavitation additive is at the correct concentration in the coolant; I understand too much additive defeats the purpose, and you can get to the point where it is ineffective.
Other than cavitation pinholes in a cylinder, and glow plug wires getting too hot, and blown trannys, in thirty years I've only had to replace the differential U-joints once, and the brake cylinders twice (leakage). Big Red just keeps on running smoothly.
These are great trucks, very simple and strong. No computer to mess up. I've requested to be buried with mine, as it's been a best friend, doing everything I've asked of it with no complaints, whether it be hauling a full load of rocks or towing a 4-ton trailer (not necessarily fast). It's gonna be a big hole in the ground.
I hope Big Red appreciates the Banks Sidewinder Turbo that I'm giving him this month ;-)

I was thinking the same thing if anybody is interested i can share some of my projects on here. But they are mostly beamers, old ones tho

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about getting an auto box at first as they are more common but i drive a 530i automatic and honestly it got pretty boring pretty quick. I like to change gears myself. Also you pointing out that you're on your third tranny helped seal the deal. A transmission overhaul cost roughly 2-3000€ here if you take it to a guy. Also i thought these came with a C6?

Good to know about the towing. Fast really isn't an issue becouse you mustn't drive faster than 50 mph if your towing heavier than 1650 lbs.

The simplicity of these is one of the reasons i want one. I have had enough problems with computers and other crap like that. Mechanical problems i can fix, electrical ones not so much.

Good luck with your truck in the future

before 88 had C-6, 88 was E4od. C-6 was still an option though through 94, but very few were ordered with the C-6 after the E4od came out.

theyre not cheap here anymore kris, especially in last year i have seen the price go up a lot.

i paid $8k for my truck and the guy had more than that in receipts (motor rebuilt, new tranny) electric lift pump, stereo/amp

i have spent nearly that getting her ready for towing: new rear end with true track (went to 3.55 gearing from 4.10) new front end suspension/steering/bushings, shocks/tires/brakes/calipers, exhaust, etc

i have done a lot of little jobs too: wired manual switch for GPs, manual switch wired for back up lights (put some LEDs in the bumper), r&d cold air intake, sound barrier in cab, fixing holes in the bed, etc

its been an adventure getting to learn and know this truck intimately: she had propane injection before thanks @lonewolf lots of crazy wiring, didnt have motorcraft thermostat (very important!)

i could have saved a bunch of money if i did all the work myself but my space is limited and i still havent brought up all my tools since we moved three years ago

the one thing i heard you say that is really gonna benefit you is that you will be able to get parts and u have a shop

Well I heard the Legislature is going back into session.
Them and our idiot Gov. will for sure give us State Income Tax.
With this Covid BS, the Bunny Ranch and those places shut
down (have to stay 6ft apart ya know?) they dumped a lot of
money into the economy. Gotta get it somewhere.

I think it was in Nov. we were paying $2.05, then around election
time fuel cost starting to shoot up.
The Sinclair in Carson City is the cheapest any where around.
Reno prices are close to Calif.

On I-80 east of Reno is Love`s Truck stop, $2.99 there.

Nevada is quickly turning into Calif.

The big thing that pushed us over the edge is Las Vegas and Reno.

DarkOverCast, if you think the $400 4drocket paid for his registration in Kali.
What do you think it would be for a 2021 F250/350 with all the Bells and Whistles?

We better get back on track here, helping kristijan.

speaking of back on Track..... used to be a fair Railroad Museum there in Carson City ..don't know if it still exists
way back when I used to be President of the CCCUN (carson city commodore users network) which probably no longer exists ...but we used to support the Museum.

Go with a manual. I run one here with the T19 tranny in Germany and it gets real decent mileage for it´s size and displacement. Mine´s a Banks turbo´d ´84. I get 13l/10km with cruise set on 110km/h on the Autobahn. Push up to 120km/h and you need 15 liters. That is with BF Goodrich All Terrain tires stock size. Make sure you do oil changes every 3000 miles in case you always run short trips like you mentioned. I use mine for ranch work requiring only short (one mile) trips. In know this ain´t good for the engine, but what more can I do then changing the oil every 3000 miles and letting idle in winter before takeoff? And I will never part with the loading capability of the 8ft. box. Stack two hay bales on there and just go. You won´t feel the weight in acceleration at all.....just that it rides smoother for the springs get better compression :-)
