I have a 2002 Excursion XLT Limited 4x4 with 7.3 diesel. I recently lost 4 wheel drive and was able to identify the 4 wheel drive control module (or GEM, or body control module) as the issue. I would like to bypass the module completely and just use some toggle switches to control the motor on the transfer case. Any help would be appreciated.
Exactly what I was thinking, same issue, same problem, I didn't dig into it yet, my only concern was ability to switch between high and low. I ordered a refurbed module off ebay and crossing my fingers. That hurt the wallet.
In this for the fix. I've not seen anyone actually be able to do a mod like this because the shifter on the transmission is not an on/off switch for each gear. It's a resistor if I remember correctly (not 100%) on that. In any case, the vehicle needs to see certain things like transmission in park, neutral, or drive/reverse; speed; and whether or not the brake is pressed (for low range). I suppose one could just power the shift motor using hot and ground, but being that it has 3 positions in the transfer case, I'm not sure how you'd do that. Very interested to see how you do this, so post up LOTS of pics!!
You could bypass the stock system but would need to build a system to control the shift motor, i would think a Raspberry PI based controller to be be the simplest way to go about doing it electronically.
or switch to a mechanical system by building a shifter.
