. . . . convince my mom to buy a '92 Ranger that is in excellent shape? I've offered to pay a years worth of monthly payments and do all sorts of stuff. It's got a v6 and was well taken care of. The only thing she doesn't like is the 4 speed manual. How can I get her to buy this sweet little truck? Anything to look out for on the '92 Rangers (so that my efforts to convince her aren't being wasted)? She doesn't like much about the car she has now.
If this thread is stupid and uneccesary, I apoligize. I've got tons of energy and this truck has me excited.
When you test drive it, let the engine get good and hot, then go up a hill. Listen for pings. Also check the radius arm bushings. They are a cheap part, but lots of time if the brackets are riveted to the frame instead of bolted on. Then check all the normal stuff. Neither of the things that I mentioned should deter you from getting the truck, but if it pings or the bushings are bad it's a point in your favor for negotiations....good luck.
How many miles are on it. I hear that the 2.9L V6 has a head cracking problem, you should check that out. Thats all that I would worry about, maybe the clutch, they seem to go around 140K. Replace that with a good Bendix and you shouldn't have any problems, the tranny is really easy to get along with, the mazdas shift very well, she'll be doing it without the clutch in no time.
Seems like the manual tranny maybe the killer. It's not something like a missing option that can be easy fixed like a radio.. It's somehting that she has to use all the time multiple times when she drives the truck. If she hates manual tannys then it may be hard to budge her on something she'll have to be reminded of everytime she drives. Might want to take her out in a manual trans truck or car and let her drive a bit and shift...maybe she'll end up liking it...you never know. But don't be like the pushy used car salesman who will try to put somebody in a car they are not totally happy with.
There are 85,000 miles on it. My only concern is that with the experience I've had with my old '93 Cougar's V6 is the bad head gaskets, and I don't care to mess with that again. I don't know if the Ranger V6's had that same problem or not.
I guess there isn't going to be much of a chance to get her into it. She doesn't wanna go for the manual transmission. It's not like it's a big thing, really. She's got a good car now ('91 Grand Marquis), she just wants the smaller pickup for comfort and winter.
The funny thing is; most of the family drives fords. There's one chevy and a couple of plymouth in the family, everything else is Fords/Mercury's: 3 Rangers; 2 F-150's; 2 Taurus's; 2 Grand Marquis'. There might be more, can't remember.

Just be sure to back up what ever you promise now. If mom's ready to trust you with a vehicle, don't let her down by not making payments, keeping up with maintenance, or abusing your privledge to drive. Be home on time, o't get tickets and always drive like they taught you to (especially when they are in the truck with you).
Good luck!
No offense, but it sounds like your talking to an 18 year old. I'm 23, have a good paying job, and am reliable. Just clearing up the age thing. Anyway, I figured doing something like making the payments on the truck would be a nice thing to do. My mom has helped me in the past when things weren't going so well for me in college. If I had the money, I'd take her to the dealer lot and say pick one, then I'd write the check and say have a nice day. Too bad I don't have that kind of cash.
My mistake, I thought you were asking for the truck for yourself. Hence the age thing. I misunderstood. You are looking to buy the truck for her. Duh! I apologize. If the mod would kindly remove my boneheaded, non-relevant post, I would not be offended.
My mom has done SO much for me and my fiancee, that there's no concievable way to "pay her back". The only way we can thank her is with "grandchildren."
Anyway, on to the topic at hand. If you are planning on helping her get a truck and making the first few payments, then get her what SHE wants. Sure, take her for a test drive in it, she may like it, but if she does drive it and then decides she hates it, that's her perogative. Don't force it on her.
I hear that the 2.9L V6 has a head cracking problem
My brother had a 93 Ranger with an automatic transmission. The head cracked on his. I think we ended up having it machined back to normal. Also, if you get that truck, be sure to totally map out the cooling system. On my bro's truck, that was the main problem we always seemed to have.

It's not boneheaded. You just misunderstood. If I had a dime for everytime I've misunderstood something I'd probably be able to buy a Ranger for my mom.
bigrigfixer: I guess I have to admit that I fell for the truck a bit, but if I had the money to get what she wanted, I would get it for her. My mom rocks, simple as that. Oh, and I don't plan on getting my mom any grandchildren, so I have to find a different way to pay her back.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the 92 only have the 3.0 and 4.0 V-6? Thought the 2.9 ended in 89-90. Maybe I'm wrong. Used to know for sure cause I have a 2.9. Tough little engine. Never had the head cracking prob. Even took it to 7K once.
i know for sure that 92 had the 4.0 and that 93 offered the 3.0 and 4.0 but im not entierly sure about 92 offering the 3.0. i kinda thought they still had the 2.9. but its a good question.
I am looking out the window now at a 92 with the 2.9 V6. Nice little truck, peppy motor, and actually has some torque for its size.
My chiltons guide also says that there was a 92 with the 2.9.
