I am thinking of replacing a tired FE390 with a 7.3 Godzilla crate motor vs building a 413 stroker from the 390 block. My question is will my C6 transmission bolt up to the new Godzilla motor? I am curious to hear any other suggestions. This is going into an 1974 F250 4x4 all restored.
Chances of that C6 bolting directly up to that 7.3 are about 0.0%..... heres some discussion on other transmission ideas for the 7.3, im sure the C6 could be done with an "Adapta kit".... like Cash said .... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-the-7-3l.html

No it will not bolt up and you wouldn't want a C6 behind it anyway. The C6 is terrible for keeping even the FE in the correct powerband. Far better options for transmissions available.

Thank you. Do you have any workable recommendations where there are proven (wiring/controller) solutions. There has been a huge investment in this truck including a rebuilt C6 before the engine went down hill quickly... FYI this setup has a stub shaft connecting the trans to the transfer case.
Currently I have a GM4L80 mated to my FE and it's a good setup, it's going to be quickly switched to a Ford 6R80 because I want a deeper first gear and now the parts are available.

With the 6R80 behind a FE, do you expect to get some benefit from engine braking? or will it free wheel like the older auto's? If it can reduce speed by letting off gas like with a stick shift, it would make a truly nice modification on a classic pickup.
The 6R80 can hold the TC lock down to second gear. It's all in how you program it, the new controller and adapters have really opened up the FE to a supply of cheap reliable 6 speed autos. I will be into the swap 2400.0 with the Trans. These transmissions are cheap! The one I will be using came from a F150 3.5 and has 15k miles and was 495.00 from LKQ.
Definitely looks like a good choice. I installed a gear vender behind my np435 a couple years ago or I would be taking a hard look at the 6R80 adaptor kit and controller.
So what I am hearing is loose the C6 automatic and replace it with a 6R80 trans. My guess is this is a direct bolt up to the 7.3 gas Godzilla crate motor I am looking to purchase??? I will need controllers for both, I guess aftermarket controllers are available for the 6R80 to custom tune it for the engine combo for the pickup. If you have any recommendations for a specific controller let me know.
Interesting? that was my first choice 390 stroked to 413cid, 450 HP 500 lb/ft torq. would you still change the trans or are you the die hard C6 type of guy???
It depends a lot on what you're going to do with it. if you put on a ton of miles an overdrive is nice. otherwise why bother. I put a gear vendor on my high boy with a 4 spd but I doubt it would fit with a C6. I wanted an overdrive but it makes no financial sense whatsoever I'll never save enough gas to begin to pay for it. .
My '76 high boy has a 428 CJ in it and I'm happy as can be. no I'm not going to set the track record at the drags and it hogs gas but that's what old school big blocks do. I love the FE's they're one of the best engines Ford ever made.
Don't mean to insult but dents are what they are. I see little monetary gain from a 6/810 speed transmission. What is you ultimate goal? Moab or 20 MPG? Neither can be attained with just a 7.3 swap. If your after cool factor just check out fat fender garage swaps. Ford Trucks - Fat Fender Garage No experience dealing with this but looks like nice swap. Way over my pay scale.
So how do plan on controlling the 7.3? If you are going to use the harness out of a f250 why not use the 10r80. If you are going to use a ford control pack (if it is released yet) I bet they will have one that can control the 10r80.
Either engine combo you are considering will be fun. I would consider over drive if you want to comfortably drive down the highway.
