I have a 2002 f350 dually. Was pulling out of the driveway and the belt cut itself in half. Put a new one in and noticed the belt is moving back and forth on the fan pulley once and a while it will straighten out then go back to wobbling around, hitting the side walls of the pulley. I tried tighting the fan pulley but is on there pretty tight. Anyone know what it could be?
There’s a misalignment somewhere. Was the belt squeaking or chrirping at all before it gave up? Spray some water on the smooth side of the belt and see if it quits wandering around on the water pump pulley for a few seconds. Good time to spin all the pulleys by hand to check for bad bearings also. They should all be smooth and quiet when spun by hand.
So went ahead and bought me a new tensioner. Same thing and I apologise my description may have been a little off. Doesn't look like it's the belt wobbling anymore its the entire fan and the pulley it is bolted on too. When looking at the pulley it looks like the belt is moving side to side but looking right at the fan you can see it just wobbling around. The old tensioner was pretty lose so it wasn't a complete loss but still can't drive the truck around.
I had a belt squeak that was driving me crazy for the longest time, never could figure out which accessory was causing it. What I found is the pulley for the power steering pump was pressed on too far, the pulley should be flush with the the end of the shaft it resides on. I pulled the pulley out a little and the squeak was solved. It wasn't pushed in by much but was just enough to make the belt squeak against the side of the pulley. Check that first, that is a cheap and easy fix and since the belt goes from the power steering to the fan that would be a great place to start. If the power steering pump is ok, next guess would be water pump, they are fairly common to fail, mine was wobbling around a lot before it seized up. Take the belt off and see if there is any up and down or side to side play by trying to lift the fan, if there is replace it, because its not fun when it fails.
Well I've taken the fan off and the pulley and it's the water pump bearing. The bearing is pretty much falling apart even turning it with my hand feels terrible couldnt tell with the pulley attached. All the other pulleys feel perfect I just can't figure out what would have caused the bearing to do that. Thank you guys for helping me out and with the quick responses. If anyone has questions I'm happy to answer.
Glad you figured out what it was, now its time to fix it! If you have never done a water pump before read up on it. Its not a bad job, I did mine laying on the ground without the truck on any stands. One thing to note is some of the bolts are longer than others so just be sure not to mix them up. I used all Motorcraft parts.
