Rough idle, no power

I recently acquired a 97 f250 powerstroje with a 7.3L. I've had issues from the start due to lack of power. I have replaced the fuel filter, the passenger battery was dead, and the rest ill get to in a second. During troubleshooting, I unplugged each section of wiring harness on the valve cover gasket to see if I had an injection issue while the motor was running. Starting on the passenger side, both plugs when unplugging them killed the motor. On the driver side, when unplugging them, neither plug killed the motor. Does this sound like the motor is only working on half of its injectors? Side note; when I pulled the valve cover, I noticed the valve cover gasket was burned at the connections. I also took those four injectors out to rebuild them. Is this the route I should take or should I be looking somewhere else? When I say this truck has no power I mean, I can't get up a hill hardly. No smoke is coming from the exhaust either. (Maybe an injector stuck closed?)

The injector drive module has the ability to shut one bank down to protect itself if it senses a short on that bank. It sounds as if the drivers side needs a new valve cover gasket, and maybe the plugs/harness ends that go to the gasket. What do the under valve cover harness look like? They may need replacing also. I doubt rebuilding the injectors will cure your problem, without replacing the gasket and maybe the harness ends.

Farmert is absolutely right. Burnt valve cover harness means you're only running on one bank. Burnt harnesses seem relatively common; enough injectors failed badly enough to give your symptoms sounds very rare. The expectation for injectors seems to be that they slowly wear out gracefully.

Replace the harnesses; that is your key problem. You might as well do harnesses on both banks. THEN, once it's running OK, determine if injectors are worn enough to warrant rebuilding. And if you decide to rebuild them, do all 8 so each cylinder and bank is contributing equally.

The valve cover gasket on the driver's side was burnt up on the inside showing wires on both connectors. Replaced both valve cover gaskets and she runs extremely well for a truck with 360k miles on it.

Problem was fixed by replacing the gaskets, would I have to take it to a shop to check injectors or is this something I can do on my own? I've heard of pulling an injector with the truck running to check sprays. Is this true? I have a rebuild kit coming for all 8 injectors

There are a bunch of threads specifically on injectors, and many guys with lots of experience. I've only had issues with the valve cover harnesses, and have no intention of going anywhere near the injectors anytime soon. You may want to start a new thread specifically on checking and rebuilding your injectors.
