p0402 will mean that the EGR cooler is plugged. The fix is a new cooler due to soot build up. Most likely the causes of this is a lot of low speed or exended idling.

Those that tow a lot can keep it clean. There are some videos on the process to replace.

Since the truck is a 2017, as long as it has less than 100K miles (can't recall if you mentioned it) then it would be a warranty item. If out of warranty then you can do the job yourself.

Thanks. The truck has about 64,500 miles on it. I've owned it for about 4 months now and put about 4,000 miles on it. Some with towing but mostly with no towing. Since I'm working from home right now, most of my trips are just short trips within about 10 miles of the house. Sometimes it doesn't even get a chance to warm up completely. I don't think the previous owner did a lot of towing either, but I don't know. Guess it's time to reach out to the dealer to see about getting this looked at.

Thanks for info Senix. I'll update when I have more information.

Senix you know more about these trucks than I do, having looked at the service manual, it does not show a cooler issue as a result of this code.

However P0401 does indicate a restricted EGR cooler as a possible issue.

OP maybe the following will help you search for what is causing your DTC before sending it to the dealer.

I got that code wrong! Disregard the cooler as the probable issue and follow the guide above. I would still expect this to be covered by warranty.

No worries on the mistake. Been there and done that, many times.

After watching that video that dirthawg provided, I went and looked at my truck. The MAP sensor is in the same location (didn't expect much change between year models since it's the same engine) and I pulled it out. After looking at the one in the video, his was in good shape. Mine was almost halfway closed with carbon (soot?) buildup. I cleaned it up for now and I'll be running on about a 60 mile trip this evening so we'll see if that helps. If it does, then I may just buy a new sensor and swap them out and solve that problem.

I'll let y'all know how it goes!!!

Right On! Sounds like if your MAP sensor was worse than the one in the video then that's your issue. Sure would be easier to replace it yourself than send it to the dealer.

I agree, that is harder worth the effort for a service visit. Your time is valuable too.

I agree!! A little skin off the knuckles and I was able to clean it up. I'll find out in a little while if that fixes it. The new part is about $82 from Tasca (only place I've priced it so far), but that's easier than going to the dealer and leaving the truck for a few days.

Ditto on this. I enjoy working on my vehicles when I can, but there's some things that are out of my realm of knowledge. I'm willing to learn, just need to find the correct info to learn it.

I appreciate all the info from both of you. Perhaps I'll be able to keep this truck running for a few more years.

Not sure if Tasca sales Genuine Motorcraft or not but I have heard it's best to always use Motorcraft sensors.

Below is a link to the OEM MAP sensor and looks like the part number is good for the 2011-2019 6.7s

My MAP sensor was packed full of soot. I was dealing with a P0401 EGR cooler issue for a while and that probably didn't help the soot situation. I tried cleaning but had to replace, I suspect I damaged it getting the soot out though. I also lost a 9mm socket in the valley of my engine because of that sensor, fumblefingers. It's either still there or on the side of a road somewhere. Mine was not a 7mm.

I've bought from Tasca in the past and they do sell genuine Ford parts. I've also bought from AutoNation Ford White Bear Lake as well. That part number supercedes the one I found online earlier (the one I found ended with -A) but it's a little cheaper to buy from AN White Bear Lake. The only difference would be in the shipping. I'll do some looking around before I order.

Unfortunately, cleaning the sensor didn't fix the issue. Drove 30 miles out and got about 5 miles headed back and the CEL came on again. Same code. So I will probably wind up setting up an appointment with the dealer since this is still under the 5yr/100,000 mile warranty for Diesels. I've also found a TSB for this code, #19-2343. I'll let them deal with it from here on out.

Thanks for all the input!!!!

Thanks for reporting back. So what I wonder is if they come to the same conclusion..and put a new one in.

I would take it in at this point. Reflashing the PCM is the first step of that TSB even if the MAP sensor is bad you will still get an updated PCM.

I had a reflash done on my truck for a P0170 which is one of the codes listed in that TSB referenced above and it fixed my issue without needing parts.

Well, I have an appointment set for Monday at 9 to drop it off and let the dealer work on it. I'm hoping that everything will be covered under warranty and no money out of pocket for me.

Update to come soon!!

Latest update on the issue with the codes. Finally got the truck back from the dealer and all they could find was a bad MAF sensor. They tested and found that even though I had cleaned the sensor, it was still testing bad. They covered the repair under warranty (factory, not my extended warranty) and all is good. I dropped the truck off Monday morning and the service writer told me they were a little behind, but they might get it in that afternoon or the next day. Since I'm WFH right now (and I work third shift) and I have another vehicle to use if needed, it was no big deal. I am looking into the factory-manuals.com manuals, but I gotta save a few more pennies to get the package. I'm glad that they got it fixed so quickly and I took it and put 50 miles on it after it got to normal operating temp and everything is good.

Thanks to all of you for your advice and help. That's the great thing about these forums!!!! All the smarts I don't have in one handy place!!!!
