Unhappy Low Power Low Fuel Mileage

OK I bought a 2001 Ranger Super Cab used 3.0 V6. I thought it would get better mileage than the 4.0. I drove both and the 4.0 was lots better on power. Now that I have the 3.0 I see that it gets poor mileage (16-18 on highway) and is not real powerful at all. I have trouble on the highway keeping up without keeping my foot in it. Do you think there is something wrong with it. It seems to run great. I have a 3.0 taurus that gets much better mileage and has more power - same engine.
Any suggestions to improve both power and mileage?
Thanks

Welcome to FTE. I would start by replacing the fuel filter and plugs.

Welcome to FTE trsest1,
If you still experience problems after you do what Mike W said, pull the computer codes for a further evaluation!
If you really want to talk about having no power, try a 2.3L!

I agree that the 3.0 in the truck seems to feel slower than the one in the Taurus. Is the truck auto? Mileage should be around 20. Some get better some get worse. Despite what everyone says, I seems to get about 20 regardless of how I drive or whether it's the city or highway. Make sure you don't need a new air filter as well as the fuel filter. Do you know what gears you have, and are tires the same size as they came from the factory?

Well one thing I have seen now is that if I turn off the OD when I am getting on the highway it does better. The last tank of gas was 20mpg. I saw that the AC compressor comes on in the heat/vent setting as well as defrost. I knew about defrost but the other one was new to me.
My plans are to get a highpo intake and exaust and see what that can do for me.
