Picked up a decent 79 4x4. Its F250(emblems say) with what looks like D44 front D60 rear.Has heavy springs, 4 speed and a 460 looks like. Funny thing is the VIN appears to indicate a F150? Since I bought it I think I read someplace there were no 460 in a 4x4. So I may have a mix match truck here hahah. It runs good and drives ok, does need a fair amount of love. Body not bad,bed needs floor work.It will be here in a week or two. I got from a friend out of state and he is going to haul when he comes this way. Any input would be great. Thanks
Welcome to FTE It looks like you have some work to do, but it should be a great project. As far as I can find, the 400 V8 was the only big block available for the 79 model year truck. Generally speaking, the 400 is not considered a "Big Block: as it is a member of the 335 engine series, (302., 351, 400). The 460 is a true big block and a member of the 385 series engines, (370, 429, 460). Probably, short of finding the production numbers, (usually on the right side of the block, near or behind the starter motor), the most obvious way to tell the difference is the size, (width) of the intake manifold.
In the upper left corner of your page, you'll see a block named, "forums". Click on it. There are a couple sub-forums for you to ask your question(s) in. First, the "Older, Classic and Antique Truck" section. Your year group will be indicated there. Second in the, "Performance, Engines and Troubleshooting" section. Don't be afraid to post pictures. It will help people ID the engine or other parts you are needing help with.
