I just purchased a 2007 F250 6.0 Powerstroke for a work truck. It's got a hundred and seventy thousand miles on it, and get about 12 miles per gallon and it don't have a whole lot of power. I am concerned with the soot building up in the EGR valve. I am considering bulletproofing, however I'm worried that the truck won't be able to handle it once I start adding power.
I'm brand new to the 6.0 Powerstroke and I'm just looking for some advice. Also it takes 10 to 15 seconds of cranking before it starts in the mornings. Is this just to let oil pressure build-up or something else?
As above. Usually they fire in under 5 seconds when cranking.
You really need to have tools to monitor engine outputs. Research an app called Forscan for smartphones or tablets. Then get a wireless obd2 adapter that works with your phone. WiFi or Bluetooth.
Several things can impact cold starts and they can be cheap to expensive. Can’t throw parts at this.
Glow plugs,FICM, injectors, high pressure oil leaks, weak batteries are possibilities.

How cold is cold?
I have a scan tool the only code that shows up is glow plug number 3 cylinder. It's about 30 degrees right now. But if I don't plugged in it won't start. I bought this truck in August with a nightly temperature around 60 70 degrees. It's always been hard to start. I've changed the glow plug twice. It also has a small oil leak. Does the injectors run off of oil pressure? Shouldn't I be getting better gas mileage than that or is that common?
Yes, the injectors operate on the high oil pressure side. It takes over 575 lbs to allow the engine to start. If the STC (snap to connect) of the high pressure oil pump or any oil o rings fail throughput that system, you probably can't start it unless in cold whether where the oil is thick initially. Testing the IPR high oil regulator, your performance with a sticking vgt turbo, egr issues could all affect performance.
I get 16-17 mpg in town and 19 on the road. Sounds like you should have it tested for pressure leaks to improved starting.
Poor mileage could e many things, including poor injector function, stiction, dirty oil, dirty fuel filters, etc.
I would suggest you read some of the posts in the tech files. Get yourself oriented with a 6.0. They are easy to work on but very complex to diagnose. The scan tool advise is Major important. You have to be able to read live data and Dtc's. There are a lot of sensers on these motors and if you can't scan for Dtc's your pissing in the wind. You don't want to guess and throw parts at it.
I got tourqe pro and a bafx odb 2 adapter for mine..15 for adapter and 5 for app..i love it ..it is an invaluable scan tool..monitor and many other things..worth getting..you can diagnose a lot better with an app like that

I've been looking all morning for the Tech files. Can someone please help point me in the right direction? As always I appreciate all the advice. Thank you!
Search you tube for diesel tech ron 6.0 no start videos. Lots of info, what to monitor and readings for a successful start.
see if you can find those in your current code reader. He also has a troubleshooting glow plugs. Not sure why you still have problems if the correct part was replaced.
I'm not sure either. I've replaced the glow plug twice, the wire harness once. For some reason after a couple days that faults again. I'll do a suggested and keep you updated. Thank you
I apologize guys. It just took me a little while to get acquainted with this site. Found a tech folder with a lot of information in it. Thank you for your valuable time!
