01 f250 4x4 6.8L with I believe 4r100 trans..... There is a cooler line near the front of the trans and it is leaking where the flared line goes into that hollow bolt. It's leaking at the outside of all that I.E. the flare is bad or....is there supposed to be an oring in there? I can't get a flare tool on it because the steel line has a bend immediately after the fitting. Obviously the 1st try should be to replace that line but does anyone know where to get that crazy hollow bolt that holds both lines to the side of the trans and or what it's called? I don't want to buy the line and find out I've got to replace that bolt also and start all over. Thanks!
Without any help here I was able to find the proper terminology for my issue and able to resolve the leak....so far.....
Look up bypass valve....there is a bypass line on the side of the trans and in my case the front connection of this system was leaking. After finding the correct terminology and finding images of repair kits I realized/guessed that a missing o-ring was my issue. Parts diagrams would have saved me tons of time here. There are plenty of "bypass" termed discussions here but it was tough to find myself on the wild web.....
By missing I mean deteriorated beyond any recognition of an o-ring. It was nothing more than a thin layer of hard powdery stuff left in the fitting where the flared line leaves the trans and goes to the cooler. I found an o-ring from my kit, threw it in there and it appears to have stopped leaking for now. I'll follow up if it starts leaking again any time soon. Now off to my every 6 month exhaust leak. Just ordered stainless studs and gaskets for the pass. side manifold that was completely repaired a year ago. And I'm tearing into cutting out the y pipe and replacing it with SPD performance kit. The original sprung a leak. I get sooo tired of working on this truck's exhaust..
it was most likely the wrong type of oring if it deteriorated, although it is an older truck, probably worth it to buy the right one and have it last another 19+ years. Ford probably can get you one for under $1,000.00

Yep... and I bet I put the wrong kind in too. I realized when I was done that I should have at least checked my stash for a green one. Lol!
