Hello All!

Newbie here with my first post on this forum. Been lurking for a few days after I put a deposit on a 1969 F100. The seller backed out before I could get it picked up - probably was offered more money...

So, my son and I are on the hunt again. This will be a project for us over the next couple years, for him to drive when he turns 16. My question is:

Is there any reason to specifically look for a f100 or a f250 in regard to fixing one up? Will either be easier to "modernize"? I highly doubt we will do the crown vic conversion, but we will want to make it as safe and easy to drive as we can.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

F-100 makes a much more comfortable daily driver.

F250 suspension is stiff as heck. A real kidney kicker sometimes.

That said, they are basically identical trucks. So it boils down to what you find. But I would be trying for an F100 over the 250

Yeah roger that. Good to know they are basically the same. I figured the 250 would ride like a tank...I've always had an F250 and can only imagine how they rode back in the day!

Having owned a '68 F-250 for five years, I can tell you that the aftermarket is a little better for the F-100 trucks with regard to suspension and brake parts.

F-100s are in high demand, so expect to pay more up front.

And, yes, it definitely rides a little rough.

As a F250 owner, I concur with the other posts.

In your situation.... The basic priority (Other than Father / Son time).... Will be to give your son some of the basic's of mechanics.... The pickups of the late '60's offer the "Basic's"... Honestly, it's pretty hard to screw up a late '60's truck, of any make or model. Depending on how much room you have, you may want to pick up a decent unit as well as a "parts truck"... Just a thought. This could possibly let you avoid a bunch of Chinese parts on a classic truck.

Sounds like a great project.

Keep us posted.

Yes, I think it will be a great project for us. He has always wanted an older pickup - We asked him a couple weeks ago why he wanted to go with an older pickup...and he said "cause all the other kids are gonna have new pickups. I want something cool..." I have to say, I was pretty proud of his thought process!!

I have a couple more in the sights...hopefully we will get one bought pretty quick! I will post pics as soon as we do...

I would go with 100/150 ride better, easier wheel options, short bed option.

Great project have fun!

I looked at this one today. 1969 f100 with straight six and 3 on the tree. Bad re-paint on it, but looks pretty straight.

Does the cab roof look like a major problem? Anything else that would scare anyone off?

Of coarse the six cylinder will be gone. We will definitely be dropping an engine in and painting at some point.

I would pass on this one. Too much rust. Especially that roof rust.

What type engine are you planning on putting in it if you dont like the straight 6? If it something that came in the trucks originally, I would look for a truck with same type engine. That way youre not doing engine mounts and who knows what else.

Keep in mind you (or your son) will spend a ton of money and time on it if your expectations are high. There’s something to the other kids wanting new trucks and it’ll take money and time to have a new running truck. They’ll be driving by and honking when there’s a breakdown. That roof rust looks like mice are in the roof channels and it’s rusting inside out or just a bad surface prep on the repaint.

Any V8 really. I would love to find a nice re-built 390. If we were to buy this pickup, we would find a fuel injected v8 to drop in. The ultimate goal is to have a modern running/riding pickup, that looks old on the outside .
