A very Close Friend of mine knew I was looking for a truck to install an engine I have in. He Found a Cousin of his with this tired 1966 F100 long Bed. original engine was a 352 FE, Auto. It died of old age and he stripped body of about everything but the windshield. That became broken when he tried to install a 302 automatic in with trans on it. He kept the 302 and Trans. I bought the rest. Came in a lot of boxes. This was in early March of this year. Body has rusted thru floors, bed, lower door halves, some on hood, other places. Tail gate is toast. Will be a challenge.
First priority is the Suspension, running gear, steering gear and brakes. My plan is to lift the bed off, rework the rear suspension, rear gear, Rear Brakes, parking Brakes, etc. Front fenders and inner fenders are off. Reworking all moving parts. Installing Front discs. Sway bars front and rear. That’s mostly done. Pictures to follow soon. Working on Engine now. More soon. Zeke.
First and Foremost; welcome to FTE! Since looking at couple years before giving her a test drive, if that the case suggest last item on the assembly list is the engine replacement. Depending upon how correct intend to restore may consider upgrade the bench seat, one can take the tracks off the 65, believe seat tracks are same 65 thru 72> and swap them for most seats up and including the 90's. I installed the lower profile 87 Lariat 40/20/40 seats in my 65.
Again, welcome, looking forward to U'r input and pic's of progress.
After a lot of sandblasting and some welding rear backing plates are ready to assemble. Rear brakes assembled. My assistant checking my work. 9” rear rebuilt, new bearings, limited slip, new gear set
Finished rear suspension, rear end including new axles, shocks, bearing, gears and pose unit. Mounted anti sway bar kit, new paring brake cables and more. worked forward to front suspension. LOTS of sand blasting, new bushings, front Springs, drag link, ty rod, all bushings, a front disc brake kit and spindles with new King pins. front anti-sway bar also. Can't finish it till engine, trans, and all other weight are in. Duel master cylinder and proportion valve to be installed after cab is reworked. also new steering gear and coupling. About as far as I can go till engine and trans are installed. Project Security Guard.
This project all came about because I once owned a 1980 Diamond motor home built on an extended E350 chassis. It’s engine was a 351 2 Barrel Windsor. Was very long in the tooth and getting weak. I used it to tow a drag car, Ford, of course. I decided in about 2003 or4 to build a torque engine to replace it. Had a solid 351 w block bored .030, align bored and decked. Obtained a 393” stroker kit with pistons for about 8.9-1 compression, world products iron heads with 2.02in and 1.6 ex valves and chambers for that compression. All of this including a Lunati cam, head studs and more laid around my shop since new. I had sold the motor home and race car. I finally decided to find something for the engine to go in. I finally decided that it would make a great f100 engine with a Ford top loader behind it. That is the background for my choice. Also 1966 is the year I graduated from high school.
