Yeah it seems like first and second only shift when high rpm and I let off I hope it's not a transmission I heard e4od trans are expensive and I have a 94 aod trans out of a e350 inline 6 but I'm not sure how hard that swap would be
There are several components that affect shifting. Speed sensor, Speedometer (PSOM), throttle position sensor, shift selector sensor. Any one of those not working properly can cause shifting problems.
Shift timing is 100% controlled by the computer, so don't be so quick to blame the e4od.
As automatic transmission goes, it's not bad. It's a lot stronger than the AOD. By '96 most of the bugs had been worked out. The highest price item I'm aware of that could cause shift problems is the solenoid pack at about $300 new. Good used ones are less than half that price.
1st check codes.
2nd is your speedo rock steady? If not it could be the speed sensor or the PSOM causing the problems.
The challenge with electronically controlled transmissions is that the problems can be spread all over the place. On the traditional valve-body, everything was in one place.
This site really needs a through sticky thread or how-to on diagnosing the electronic transmission issues. I'd be happy to contribute on the pieces I have knowledge.
