The bearings in my steering column are shot. I purchased the new bearings yesterday. I removed the steering wheel. I took the four mounting bolts out and dropped the steering column down. I removed the ignition and the shrouds. Took out the two screws from the upper cone and pryed the bottom lever to remove the cone. The cone will only slide as far as the rest of the ignition will let it. There is a nylon piece that connects with another nylon piece in the rest of the column. The piece in the cone is what the ignition rotates when it is turned. I am stumped at this point as what to do next. Does anyone know how to get past this point without destoying anything?????????????
If I don't get help soon I am going to buy a used steering column and then I am going to take a hammer to the old one. I spent hours yesterday trying to get this apart.
I had a yard check for a replacement column and they only found 2 in the state of Florida. They want 250.00 for a used column. Please someone tell me they can take this thing apart. The bearing are on 11.70 for both.
Finally found out what I was missing. After you take out the ignition switch. There are 3 items below it. A clip of some kind mine was a plastic clip. A metal spacer and a gear that holds the nylon piece from going any further. I finally have my steering column moving smoothly. It's nice!!.
I have a none tilt wheel and there are 2 bearings in the top cone. The small bearing can be changed without removal but the larger bearing which is in the back of the cone can only be changed after removal. Both of my bearings were totally gone. Only the ring remained.

good to hear. i tried the samething but fiund it easier to just get a new/used column. i think i spent only 175 for a buddy's truck of mine but then that was a chevy
