Slow F150

I have a '03 F150 with a 4.2.V6. Slowest vehicle I have ever owned. Has a 5 speed with a 3.55 rear end. Any hope of pepping it up by changing rear end to 3.73 or 4.10?

Changing gears may make it "feel" a bit quicker at the expense of higher rpm and fuel mileage. The real problem is that trucks are quite a bit heavier than cars and the smallest engine option for fuel mileage is usually a bad choice. You need to choose a truck engine with horsepower and torque that compliments what your using it for at the expense of fuel mileage.

Has it always been slow or has it gradually gotten slower?

I bet if OP used a few more RPMs when shifting, it won’t be as slow.

Most times I see folks complain about “slow” with a manual trans, they’re too busy shifting below 2,000 RPMs going uphill or with a trailer trying to futilely save fuel.

That gets you nowhere with a 4.2 with its peaks.

I agree that he probably needs to rev it up some more before shifting. My 01 Supercab 4.2/5 spd with a 3.55 rear does well enough for Houston driving. Not going to win any races but it’ll move. You can use 1st all the way to about 30mph here but I normally shift at about 20, 35, 45, and then 60mph for normal driving. Doing it this way I’ve been averaging about 17mpg but I don’t really tow and the weights I haul are typically not worth mentioning (camping equipment)
