Rims/wheels

The set of rims that I have on my 2000 excursion have never really been that pleasing to me. They were on it when I got the vehicle. The rims are made by gear alloy 715C Recoil wheel, it was been discontinued. 17 inch rim. I am running 285 70r17 Michelin defender LTX load range E. The problems I am having: the front rims have cabs so it covers the hub lockers if I needed to manually switch I need to remove the caps. Not a big deal just a nuisance.
The major issue is you cannot add wheel weights to the outer edge of the rim. It must be added to the inner edge. Even if you use slim weights on the inner rim they still manage to strike the steering knuckle thing and make a tick tick tick tick tick as you’re going down the road. Eventually it will knock the weight off. next step is you add sticky weights to the inside of the rim. Usually they barely hit or you can get them where they don’t but for some reason it seems they don’t adhere very well and eventually you throw a weight. Every time I get a new set a tires or go in for a rotation it ends up I have to go back into the shop two or three times and have them re-balance the front tires so that the weights are out of the way. I’ve had enough.
I like the tire size so what I would like to do is get a rim that is more functional. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Is there a 17 inch Ford f250/350 rim that I need to be looking for or what?

Have the tire shop balance with tire beads. They go inside the tire and have nothing stuck to the outside of the rim anywhere.

OK I never heard of that. Thats an option. I still don’t like how the rims look, or the lack of functionality because of the four-wheel-drive lock. Is there a 17 inch rim for f250/350 that is factory?

Yes but you’ll need quality spacers to run them. 05 and newer had the option but the backspace is wrong the leaf spring truck.

As far as recommended spacers or experience I don’t have any to share. I know everyone says, and rightly so, to get hub centric spacers. Properly torqued and maintained I wouldn’t see how there could be an issue other than it is one more point that could fail potentially. Ford did offer 18” wheels that would work without spacer but only in 04.

I want to keep the tires as they are still on the first rotation basically brand new. Im just fed up with the hassle. Second set on the vehicle, for 60,000 miles that’s a lot of rotations and a lot of “hey can you double check and fix the weights they’re still rubbing“...lol
Like I said the tire size is 285/70 R 17.
i’m not a big fan of failure points…
an upgrade to a newer style F250 rim might be a nice look as well...

I was just reading on those tire beads and it seems like 50/50 some folks say they work some say they don’t.
has anybody put some of the newer 17 inch rims with a spacer? What combination spacer size and year of rim did you use?
The guy from custom offsets indicated in an email that he didn’t think a spacer would be necessary. How do I figure it out?

If you want to use an OEM 17" wheel it easy to figure out, you will need spacers. ALL OEM 17" wheels are '05 or newer, so that means the geometry is different from our leaf spring trucks, that difference brings the need for spacers to properly locate the wheels and tires under our older rigs. The need for a hubcentric spacer is to maintain that same hubcentric feature that the truck has and for how the wheels are designed to mount to the truck. As for spacer thickness, while the geometry difference is only 1.75"-ish different using a 2" thick spacer should keep you from having to trim the ends off of your lug studs. If the lug studs protrude beyond the mounting face of the spacer they can interfere with proper wheel mounting and damage the wheels.
Ive never used spacers so I have no first hand experience of references for good ones. My EX is a tow rig for a heavy TT and I didn't like the idea of having the additional potential failure point (real or imagined) of spacers so I went with the '04 OEM 18" wheels that correctly fit our older rigs.
