Hi all, I recently restored a 1989 F150 4.9 after it sat for about 10 years. Below are some of the things I replaced. Went from a complete no start dud to I thought a champ. Reason I brought it back was because it has almost no rust, has very low miles, and nostalgia.
Yesterday I finished and then took it on it's maiden voyage, drove about 20 miles. The thing ran fantastic and I was very pleased with myself. However this morning the truck all of a sudden will not start. It will start with starting fluid but it shutters and shakes then dies when I release the throttle. It almost feels like the timing is way off, but I did re-time previously and made sure to tighten down the distributor. Could it be the fuel pressure? Was fine before and I don't have a working fuel pressure gauge at the moment, don't won't to buy if could be something else. I'm dumbfounded. Any ideas?
Fuel Tank
Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter
Fuel Tank Reserve
IAC Valve
Distributor Cap
Spark plugs & wires
Computer
Ignition switch
Map Sensor
Water Pump
Thermostat
Belt
Complete overhaul of brakes
Muffler and tail pipe
May not help but recently i had a similar issue and unhooked my egr vacuum line and it cranked right up and ran fine. The egr vacuum line shouldnt be getting vacuum at idle but if it is makes it hard/impossible to start. Something easy to check
Let's start with the "Fire Triangle"...
Is it getting fuel ?
Is it getting air (oxygen) ?
Is it getting a source of ignition ?
Since it,somewhat, ran with starting fluid, I'd say it is getting ignition. Is it getting air ? Have you tried to start it without the air cleaner ? When you look down in the carb, do you see fuel coming out ? What comes out the tail pipe when you attempt to start it ? Smoke, moisture, etc ?
Just somewhere for us to start.

Sorry I lost my original login, but I started this thread.
I just posted another thread not seeing this, but basically now what is happening is the truck will start perfectly in in the afternoon, runs like a champ. However it will not start in the morning. What’s going on? Weather has been cold at night
I went and bought a new fuel pressure gauge. There was no pressure reading when I hooked it up. Turn the key to on and let the fuel pump run, pressure will build until 55 psi and then the pump turns off. In idle the pressure holds at 45 psi. If I remove the vacuum on the fuel pressure regulator it jumps to 55 psi.
Is this the correct psi for this motor? Should the fuel lines always have pressure?
Also the EGR valve makes a buzzing noise for about 10 seconds after I turn off the truck. Don’t know if that’s normal.
You think the problem is the EGR valve? What if I replace it? The truck is near mint, trying to restore it to original.
A test was suggested first before replacing anything. It might not fix it if that wasn’t the problem. So you want to replace it with a Ford part if found to be bad?
